Lucas is a self-admittedly terrible director of actors. The only time he gave actual instruction to Carrie Fisher was telling her to be angrier when they were filming her meeting with Tarkin before Alderaan's destruction. The rest of the movie, he just left her to her own devices. Other actors have similar stories.
