Popcorn by itself is perfectly fine.
The theatre I worked at added 1/4 cup of oil and 3 tbsp of salt per batch of popcorn, which was enough to fill 10ish large popcorn bags. IIRC, a large popcorn (which was massive) was just 480 calories if you don't add anything to it, which is perfectly fine.
The calories come from butter, which is 100ish calories per tbsp. When its liquid, people easily add 10+ tbsp's without hesitation.
