There was a lot of stupid shit in LotR that got cut because they actually had time to sit down and think it through. Plus a lot of the CGI in the hobbit was clearly a cover for not having enough time to get practical effects ready
The Hobbit films are still terrible, but I feel kind of bad for Peter now
