The premise of this series is that wars have broken out in countries around Japan and it took in lots of refugees in concentration camps. Both the refugees and Japanese nationals use cybernetic tech to upgrade their bodies and brains.

Then a kind of virus or worm is spread on the media, so that some people are caught in a hero or martyr fever. These people who have no ties with organizations begin to carry out seemingly terrorist attacks.

I don't know if this is a good story to be adapted into a movie now with the European refugee crisis raging on.
>>
>>68870880
They will name the groups/ethnicities different. People wont put two and two together. Literally every sci-fi/political drama post cold war.
>>
>>68870880
Why did Japanese make this refugee stories before the crisis in Europe ?
>>
>>68870880
Wrong board
>>
>>68871427
they did it a decade before, you can't blame them
>>
>>68870880
It's a fantastic story/premise, I even at one point tried writing a screenplay for American broadcast networks, it's so good. It gets overshadowed by the Laughing Man Incident.
>>
>>68870880
>seemingly terrorist attacks.
>Holding an entire embassy hostage is "seemingly' a terrorist attack
>>
>>68870880
If the plebs don't get why taking real life refugees can be a bad move they definitely won't get why fictional ones matter. It's a solid story and it would be relevant, but the audience won't understand why any of it matters. I can already hear the cries of "Why didn't they just give them the island?"
>>
>>68870880
seems like a good time to me.
>>
>>68874005
I was going to say seemingly spontaneous terrorist attack but the word somehow disappeared.
>>
But the point is that info wars are being waged against the refugees to push them to the brink. Despite that they maintain solidarity, determination and humanity. So it's a pro-refugee message overall.
>>
>>68874711
It's the same "government is the bad guy refugees are good" old formula that even Japanese cannot break.

They however had the balls to let the refugees suicide bombers to go off. If it's in the west there will only be camouflage bombers who are from government's bad guys
>>
>>68874711
They're really only able to do that because of Kuze who is literally cyborg Jesus.
>>
>>68874711
It's funny that the refugees stay united by watching Kuze's live streaming
>>
>>68874711
That's part of the point. I felt the larger point, which OP failed to bring up, is that the internet is making it so humans aren't trying to do great things for society anymore. The overabundance of information compels us to stay contented with what we have. That's why Ghoda spread the virus. To create an artificial hero in a stagnant society.
>>
>>68874813
>It's the same "government is the bad guy refugees are good" old formula that even Japanese cannot break.

That's not true at all. Did you watch 2nd Gig?

It's overshadowed because it's dumb. Individual Eleven was dumb. The fact that the one dude was somehow related to the Major or some shit was fucking dumb.

Second gig was simply dumb, but god damn that opening OST:

>The fact that the one dude was somehow related to the Major or some shit was fucking dumb.

Yeah that was dumb.

>Individual Eleven was dumb

How so?
>>
>>68870880
Was that the plot of season 2?
Shit didn't really make sense to me.
I know the US was intentionally causing political unrest in Japan, but they were going to nuke Japan and not invade it.
Season 2 was definitely a step down from season 1.
>>
>>68874883
Did you not see how internet changed the refugees' lives? They make money and do works and get inspired.
>>
>>68874864
>>68874851
It's funny but is it any different than a Nelson Mandela or a Ghandi. Both were symbols more than men; Vessels for the hopes of the oppressed.

>>68874883
But is he an artifical hero? Are youtube celebs not celebs if they happen online? I like to think that Kuze's triumph is that he makes the neural net to make the net realer than real, to make it the real society.
>>
>>68874966

I dunno, I felt the concept was very dull. It was the King in Yellow for the cyberpunk age.

The original GITS movie and SAC both seemed more... unique? I don't know. I guess they just make 2nd gig seem dumbed down in comparison.

Even so, 2nd gig is a masterpiece compared to Arise.
>>
>all those who are infected by the worm to become terrorists are male, older than 30, and virgin
>>
>>68871427
the Jews fear the samurai
>>
>>68875051
They say Kuze is artificial because Goda spread the meme virus to literally create him. Not just creating the hype for him, the virus infected him and made him do what he did.
>>
>>68874978
It's after world war 4. USA is an empire and is an enemy of Japan.

Why they still have ANPO relations with Japan I don't know
>>
>>68875096
That's what they mean around here when they tell you that you "become a wizard".
>>
>>68875051
>It's funny but is it any different than a Nelson Mandela or a Ghandi. Both were symbols more than men; Vessels for the hopes of the oppressed.
It's roughly analogous but like most things in GitS it's a step beyond what was previously possible due to the technology allowing sharing of information.
>>
>>68875063
I haven't read the King In Yellow so I can't comment, but it seems like you don't really know your own argument so I'm not sure what we have to discuss.

>dumbed down

Dumbed down? It completely expands upon the idea of the stand alone complex.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tplaTIcM_U0&feature=player_detailpage#t=76

>>68875005
It's not just about the refugees. Ghoda wanted to start the revolution anywhere, he didn't care. He just wanted to create an artificial hero because he could see what the internet had done to society and was tired of it. He explains his whole motive in the video I just linked.

>>68875051
>But is he an artifical hero? Are youtube celebs not celebs if they happen online? I like to think that Kuze's triumph is that he makes the neural net to make the net realer than real, to make it the real society.

Artificial because of the virus.
>>
>>68875343
And if I may add, that season is not just relevant because of the refugee but because everything Ghoda talks about is happening to western societies: The internet is making us content with what he have.
>>
>the virus is less a traceable computer code but more like a very vague definition of "meme"

The anime:
>the terrorist attacks and media events are closely followed and commented and appropriated by an online community

TV:
>one mass shooting news after another, in front of the backgound of the refugee/immigrants issue, interspersed by baneposting

Japanese must be so desperate that they predicted this stage 10 years before us
>>
>>68875336
Just what's his problem with virgin males?
>>
>>68874978
yeah man same, i remember the individual eleven stuff but not what op was talking about

been a while since i watched it though might be worth rewatching. but my list of anime i want to watch it pretty long atm
>>
>>68875500
did you even watch it

he LITERALLY tells Batou he himself is a virgin
>>
>>68875385
>is happening to western societies: The internet is making us content with what he have.
It also gets the refugees organized. That's what I meant to say. It's not the problem of the Internet. It's the problem with the people who use it and the problem comes from how those people are taught to think about the Internet.
>>
>>68875641
Oh absolutely. It's a wonderful contrast: The general populace uses it for entertainment and fun, taking it for granted. The refugees use it to organize themselves.
>>

>>
>you are already infected by memes
>you will be activated by reading a series of Marxist and anarchist articles

Now let's replace the trigger articles with some specific passages of a specific religious book

And you get an ordinary and boring and obvious movie
>>
>>68875343
Watching that video reminded me that Ghoda was a stereotypical mad scientist villain.

He is worse than Lex Luthor, because Lex Luthor said he was doing it for the good of the world but knew he was only doing it for himself.

Ghoda actually believes that what he is doing is for the good of society and is completely deluded.
>>
>>68874930
Second Gig was great. The only stupid part was that Kuze and the Major had that past link. Episode 14 with the sniper was TIGHT.
>>
>>68876307
>Watching that video reminded me that Ghoda was a stereotypical mad scientist villain.

That'd be a bit more true if he himself wanted all the glory. But he did not. He wanted to produce the hero, not be it.

>and is completely deluded.

Is he? It's hard to disagree with his motivation, it's easy to disagree with his methods.

>>
>>68871445
this is Television and film. 2nd Gig aired on television. Plus no one on /a/ talks about shit, if your thread doesn't involve cute girls it's doomed to archive
>>
>>68876325
>Episode 14 with the sniper was TIGHT.
That it was. But it was a stand alone episode.
The season long plot arc episodes were still shit.

>>68876379
He was an outsider and just wanted to prove how much smarter he was than everyone else. Add his deformity, he was a bitter nerd that wanted revenge on a society that didn't appreciate him enough because he didn't get the praise he deserved. Of course he wasn't worried about getting glory, because he didn't want the praise of the society that scorned him. Hence, him siding with the Americans, who would appreicate him. It was win win for him, fuck over Japan who didn't love him, and win new friends.

And that's why he was deluded. Thinking any of that was actually good for society, any society.

>The season long plot arc episodes were still shit.

How so?

>paragraph

You're completely ignoring his motivations behind starting the revolution. Him defecting to America definitely showed how much of a shallow git he was, but it doesn't somehow disprove everything else he said.

>Thinking any of that was actually good for society, any society.

Like I said, his methods I can see you disagreeing with. His motives, I really can't.
>>
>>68876430
That's just because /a/ only takes about recent anime. Something like GITS comes once every 10 years.
>>
>>68876487
I just like when the badass villains go off on monologues about their ambitions. Like in the original movie with the puppet master's speech. So I'm bound to like the general feel behind the 2nd gig plot.
>>
>>68876414
Other than that you also see, like once for the whole series, how refugees make living and speak about their political views.
>>
>>68871445
But I heard it's going to be adapted into a movie. With a character called Kuze
>>
>>68876679
I'm almost positive that episode takes place in like Thailand or something.
>>
>>68876569
>His motives, I really can't.
So he is rallying the disenfranchised. The real question is, the saviour he is creating, is he
1) Rallying the disenfranchised around ideals that they truly want, or
2) Rallying the disenfranchised around his ideals, whether or not they are what societies needs and desires.

If facebook has proven anything, it is that it is really easy to rally the shallow around something stupid that appears good.

>Rallying the disenfranchised around ideals that they truly want, or

The refugees seem to really like Kuze, so I think it's 1).
>>
>>68876961
You're making a saviour, of course they're going to like him.
You don't make an unlikeable saviour. That's Ghoda's problem. No one likes him because he is uncharismatic. So he'll make someone who is.

It is still ambiguous as to whether or not the ideals of Individual 11 are in the best interests of society or not.
>>
>>68870880
>I'm a virgin
What did he mean by this?
>>
>>68877309
I hear what you are saying anon, but that still doesn't disprove his primary motivations.
>>
>>68877336
I have no idea. It's like he is coming out gay to batou
>>
>>68877573
>>68877309

I mean christ I'm not advocating starting an artificial war, nor am I saying I agree with Ghoda's methods. This conversation only started because of your gross simplifications of Ghoda being a stereotypical mad scientist villain, and the assertion that 2nd Gig is somehow bad. It's pretty damn great.
>>
>>68876379
>He wanted to produce the hero, not be it.

That's the same as being a man who stands above men, isn't it?

The "shangri-la" motivation doesn't seem like something exclusive to japan since cheap labor utilization for the benefit of an ingroup is a common economic strategy in a lot of populations, what would make more sense to me is something akin to reclaiming its lost military capabilities to rebuild the empire of japan.
