It's a shame Diamonds Are Forever didn't really continue with the tone/story of this one, I see this as "outside" of the Bond franchise just like the Daniel Craig films. This is definitely a huge inspiration for what we got in the last decade. Don't see why they were afraid, it did incredibly well commercially (7 million budget, 83 million at the box office)
