Why? He wasn't even gone long. IF he was gone nearly the whole episode I could understand, but this is in the first couple minutes of the damn show.
They edited those applauses down quite a bit too. According to Jerry Seinfeld, they'd go on for a full minute or more.
It was just a recorded laughtrack.

I never got why he was the most liked character in Seinfeld by some. He was literally (as Elaine put it) a "hipster-doofus" and that annoyed me instead of entertained.
To me George was the most relatable.

Most laugh tracks were made from recording studio audiences decades ago and never updated.
All those people laughing and clapping are long dead.
