I don't know if this is true but instinctively, it FEELS true. The construct of the "Old World" such as it was, promoted the sharing of technology and competition between cultures on a large scale. The Europeans only had firearms because they came to them from across the Eastern world, and they combined that technology with their knowledge of metalworking and siege equipment.
