Well for one he was a drunk. He just needed money for his movies. That's it.
But it really shows his attitude. Instead of fulfilling his contractual obligations he was fucking it up like a fraud he was.

He made one really great movie that he had almost total control over, and it turned out fantastic. He basically couldn't work within the confines of the studio system, and had a total inability to take cues from producers and backers, and usually his projects fell apart because he was really committed to his vision. He basically didn't work for twenty-ish years and lived in a very expensive part of the country. He did what he needed to do to keep his lifestyle up. He couldn't go back to radio, because radio dramas all but died, and TV would've respected his artistic visions even less than Hollywood would've. Ideally, he would've had his own film studio, but he only made a handful of films that many people saw, so he faded into relative obscurity.
tl;dr- He didn't work well with others if he didn't have total control.
