It wasn't horrible. Doesn't really live up to the hype/exposure it seems to have. But I generally find horror movies silly, so you be the judge.

Yeah its worth watching
>tfw there was no literal witch
>the witch was Thomasin's other persona
>she suffers from multiple personality disorder in a time when men and woman feared everything, and the devil was literally around the corner
>the entire farm was riddled with ergot fungus, which causes hallucinations in people who eat it
>evidenced by the rotten corn, and bread they ate on the farm
>tfw the people only died after Thomasin's perceptions were removed, when her witch persona took over
>she killed the baby, left her brother to die, killed the twins, killed her father, and lashed out at her mother

Nice but the movie is self-described as a "folktale" so this alternate reality theory doesn't hold much weight. As a folktale, a story originating in popular culture, typically passed on by word of mouth, we're supposed to treat the story as truth even though witches probably are not real and this never actually happened.

>>

You also think fan theories are canon?

Sure it's a read of the events. It's not based on any facts though. There is nothing in the film to back it up, unlike the literal reading.
>>
this movie is not hard to understand. the epigraph explicitly describes its intent in writing.

it's a collection of folklore transposed into film. a family is outcast and harried by a witch. witches are dicks and satan is powerful. puritan values: man stands no chance outside of the community/church, and young women are susceptible to corruption.

i liked it. the twins were creepy as fuck and son's death is some great acting.
>>
Yeah it absolutely is. The era and the dialogue give it weight. You become immersed fairly easily.

The witch is creepy as fuck. There's a kind of psychological side to the movie, the witch only really shows up like three times but you feel her presence the entire movie

Idk m8 it was extremely good all around. Ending was very slightly awkward but doesn't detract from the whole at all.

>>68687487

how rude what the heck
>>
it's a great movie, no jump scares or anything. just a feeling of dread as you watch a family get torn apart by their own shame and inherent guilt stemming from religion.

it really captures the bleak environment and it's obvious that survival is more of reflex than done out of any real love for life.

they're all unreliable narrators and from each characters perspective it's obvious who is evil and delusional (hint, it's everyone else).

Stop looking for scientific answers for supernatural events.

>Then Caleb disappears, gets seduced by the witch so that she...What did she do to him, exactly? And why?

He's a young boy who has been having impure thoughts about his sister. The devil offers him a beautiful woman, and he accepts her. He turns to the devil, which you know because he appears to his mother in a dream offing her the book.

>The mom got tricked (by the Witch?) into...letting a crow eat her tit?

Symbolism there lad. The crow is a manifestation of the devil. Many animals in the movie are, 'evil takes many forms' and that. The crow here symbolizes her nurturing evil.

>The twins just disappeared.

Used by the witches for flying potions. The father looks up, maybe he sees something. The baby was used for the witch to transform herself, so twins were probably used to fly.

>The dad gets killed by Satan goat.

The dad is a moron. Satan uses violence against him to tun him towards evil.

I didn't get the "Killed by a witch" part.

The baby was stolen and killed by the witch in a very straightfoward way. I got that.

Then Caleb disappears, gets seduced by the witch so that she...What did she do to him, exactly? And why?

The mom got tricked (by the Witch?) into...letting a crow eat her tit?

The twins just disappeared.

The dad gets killed by Satan goat.

I don't doubt that it's my fault, I'm sure the movie makes sense to lots of people. I just don't get it.

>>
>>68689737
>easily explained

You need to jump to ridiculous conclusions like 'the fungus on their crops acted like acid and made them see hallucinations'. This is the most far-fetched bullshit you could have come up with. What's next? The daughter destroyed the shed and ripped the goats apart with her hands, or did that not happen? if it didn't happen why show it?

What about the baby? Did the wolf get it?. Must have a been a pretty sneaky wolf to literally disappear with a child.
>>
>>68689957
you literally have no idea what ergot poisoning is, how people experienced it. The goats weren't ripped apart, they were cut open yes, but it didn't show them being dismembered at all. Tard rage runs deep and that amount of destruction to essentially a stick house isn't unfathomable. The wolf didn't take they baby, but reread my post and maybe stop believing in folktales that are considered legends and not real in the first place.

>tfw acid is extracted from ergot
>>
>>68690129
Ok first of all you have no proof that it's this ergot poisoning. The corn plays a part in the story. it isn't a clue to something.

The family are banished from a comity. They think they can do without it. They can't. Their crops fail and now they have nothing to eat. Even after this the father refuses to return. He is painted as an egotist. The corn here acts as a metaphor for their lives outside the commune.

Do you have any proof that the corn was contaminated, since there were obviously still quite a few healthy heads left since the father planned to sell it. Why would he sell moldy corn? Nobody would buy it. Were they eating the moldy corn and leaving the healthy stuff to rot? Do you not see the logical gaps in your own argument?
>>
>>68690634
The father says in the movie that the "rot" has pretty much infected their farm, and they don't actually sell any corn. You don't see all the mold on plants, and back then they didn't have the tools to see what plants were truly non-infected. There are no logical gaps in my argument, only in yours when you get so angry over my take on the movie.
>>
>>68683354
It's probably one of the best horror films that has come out in a long time, genuinely well-made with a lot of interesting themes and ideas.
>>
I feel like I can't even read the thread to decide whether to watch it or not cause there's probably a ton of spoilers so I'm just gonna watch it anyways
>>
>>68691144
>The father says in the movie that the "rot" has pretty much infected their farm

Yeah their crops rotted. Any proof that they were infected with hallucinogenic mold?

>You don't see all the mold on plants, and back then they didn't have the tools to see what plants were truly non-infected.

ummmm I'm pretty sure mold is actually easily noticeable. have you ever seen moldy bread? Don't really need a tool to see that it's infected buddy.

>There are no logical gaps in my argument,

>father cutting corn which isn't moldy to sell
>but somehow they're all high from a fungus which would be easily noticeable

The father was high and didn't notice the mold, right?

>only in yours when you get so angry over my take on the movie.

>I don't need proof to back up my opinion, it's just my opinion don't bully me
>>
>>68687140
it is indeed
>>
>>68683354
I think there's definitely a problem with whoever the distributor is. It's not a "The Conjuring" style horror movie where there's supposed to be spooky shit happening a mile a minute to keep you shoveling popcorn into your face, and that's sort of what the marketing has been portraying it as. It's more of a Rosemary's Baby.

My honest opinion is that it can only be appreciated by people that truly understand horror.
>>
>>68691446

>It was a bit too slow
How? For me it seemed fast-paced. Like every important event happened right after the other.
>>
>>68691680
agreed
>>
>>68688520
The psychological side of it is very valid given the time period, it was one of the most interesting things about the movie imo.

Once the baby disappears every one feels personally responsible for it in their own ways due to the heavy guilt factor Puritianism was full of, and a lot of the family's downfall can be attributed to the blatant hypocritical nature of the religion itself. The boy was going through puberty and was starting to have feelings for his sister, the mother lost faith in god, the father got them all banished in the first place. The witch took the baby and cursed the boy but ultimately from the way the family reacted to those events it was more their own fault for turning on each other so easily.

Tomasin is the only one throughout the film who actually notices this kind of behavior and calls out the father on the hypocrisy behind his faith. She signs her soul to Satan ultimately out of fear of being blamed and hung for the murders or dying out alone in the wilderness.

This. I'm glad someone agrees.
