Been trying to watch some classic films from before the 70's, just saw this and I feel like I was tricked because it's absolutely fucking terrible an absolute stinker.
Before I go further with this I really want to know if there is anything else I should avoid when it comes to classic critically acclaimed film?
your opinion is one in a million.

Do people actually like this terrible flick?
It's a clusterfuck of bad acting, direction and script.
>>68629712
Avoid any American classics, they're all overrated shit. Italian and German cinema is the best.
>>68629999
It's mostly praised because of Robert Mitchum. He was creepy as fuck and did a really good job. The movie was a disaster when it came out and everyone hated it, but over time it became a cult classic.
>>68630055
>probably the best example of expressionism in film
>pure cinematography
>revolutionized the use of light
>"mostly praised because of Robert Mitchum"
this is the people you share board with
>>68630055
He wasn't creepy he was dumbfuck and a over actor I was laughing my ass off at the end where that woman shot at him with a shotgun and he starting yelling and jumping around like Daffy Duck and ran into the barn and stayed there for several hours till the police arrived.
>>68629999
congratulations, you're a special snowflake.
>>68629712
Avoid cinema, stick to anime and superheroes, maybe star wars too
>>68629712
Maybe some people are confused by opening post like this is the first old movie I've seen so I hate old movies but no I love old movies and a have seen a fair few of the classics already and enjoy most of them that's part I can recognize how terrible this piece of shit film is even for its time.
>>68630001
don't listen to this eurocuck. he is clearly high
>>68629712
Horrible fucking movie.
>>68630143
It is a gorgeous film.
>>68630251
what do you like then?
>>68630175
That was the whole point of his yelling. In truth, he was a coward and a fool and it wasn't until that moment that he was exposed for what he was for the children to see. Goddammit, I hate you.
This film is probably my favorite of all time.
Such a perfect love letter to the visual power of silent cinema and a truly american fairy tale
Sorry about your taste

Evil doesn't get respect, it should be laughed at
this movie is fucking weird and creepy
some shots, like >>68630459, and especially
the part where the kids float down the river singing and mitchum catching up with them is the most dreamlike thing i've ever seen in cinema
pic related, this shit will haunt me to the end of days
Robert Mitchum's character in this is probably the character I relate to most in all of cinema. Not afraid to give the whores what they deserve. A true hero.
It's a fucking great beautiful movie.
In the times where James Stewart refuse to ever portray a villain, Robert fucking Mitchum plays a child-killer. What a majestic fuck.

Even if the entire movie was completely shit, this one shot would redeem it.

He's intelligent, nihlistic, with a wicked sense of humor

>Willa Harper: [Willa and Harry's wedding night] Harry?
>Rev. Harry Powell: I was praying.
>Willa Harper: I'm sorry. I didn't know. I thought...
>Rev. Harry Powell: You thought, Willa, that the moment you walked in that door, I'd start to paw at you in that abominable way that men are supposed to do on their wedding night. Ain't that right, now?
>Willa Harper: No, no, no.
>Rev. Harry Powell: I think it's time we made one thing perfectly clear, Willa. Marriage to me represents the blending of two spirits in the sight of Heaven. Get up, Willa.
>Willa Harper: Harry, what...?
>Rev. Harry Powell: Get up. Now go look at yourself yonder in that mirror. Do as I say. Look at yourself. What do you see, girl? You see the body of a woman, the temple of creation and motherhood. You see the flesh of Eve that man since Adam has profaned. That body was meant for begettin' children. It was not meant for the lust of men! Do you want more children, Willa?
>Willa Harper: I... no.
>Rev. Harry Powell: It's the business of this marriage to mind the two you have now. Not to beget more. Alright, you can get in bed now. Stop shivering.
>Willa Harper: [praying] Help me to be clean, so I can be what Harry wants me to be.
Bitch got told!

Nice try Reddit
I was pretty underwhelmed by Night of the Hunter, to be honest. Too much of a focus on annoying, precocious children. Mitchum made it worthwhile, though.

Try revisiting this in a few years if you've actually developed some taste by then.
>>68629712
Stick to the 70's then. Your loss.
>>68632327
Wow exactly the reply I expected
>>68629712
Is this some troll meme movie like Problem Child 2?
It was truely horrible but now that it has unwarranted classic status no one is allowed to criticize it.
>>68629712
What? Watch The Lady From Shanghai and Touch of Evil, it may change your mind. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre was quite litterally a golden movie too.
>Children will abide
what do you guys think of this movie?
>>68632596
i liked it very much but i have curiously little interest in revisiting it
>>68632596
My favourite Kubrick, as a teen. Great character actors and photography.
>>68632477
You just have shit taste
Explain why it's bad
>>68632477
>but now that it has unwarranted classic status
It's always been a classic. Several elements of the film are referenced throughout lots of other classics that came after it. I see no real criticism of the film in this thread.
>>68629712
It's not a favorite of mine, but how can you think it's terrible? I don't understand it. And there's nothing else you should avoid when it comes to classic critically acclaimed films. See them all, and make up your own mind. They're critically acclaimed, so if I tell you which ones I don't like, I'm in the minority, and you'll probably like them anyway.
This is such low quality b8 that I'm actually surprised that people are replying to it.
>>68630251
It's not though. It's a masterpiece.
