The first showrunner left after the first season. I may be wrong about this but I remember reading somewhere that it's because the execs demanded changes from the book (in the book Laguerta is killed by Brian/Rudy/ITK and Dexter lets him escape rather than killing him). Second showrunner left at the end of season 2, I like to believe for similar reasons (robo-Doakes).
Then not long after there was the writers strike, and rather than making arrangements with the writers the execs decided to hire a gaggle of amateurs. After season 4 the writing team became almost entirely female with a puppet showrunner doing whatever the execs demanded and the directors no longer giving a shit.
So basically everyone who even remotely cared about making a good Dexter show stopped doing so.

That explained the stupid love plot in the last season. God they fucking butchered his character so much after season 1. I can't believe I watched the whole series, I really hate myself for doing it, seriously. I feel like I should watch season 1 again and try to forget anything else ever happened after it.

Fundamental misunderstanding of the character. Dexter isn't a good guy...not even an antihero but for some reason they wanted to redeem him. Ideal ending should have been him expressing no remorse and about to be executed for his crimes.

I'm slowly getting through this show. Just watched season 4 episode 2. The general consensus seems to be that I should stop watching after season 4?
I tend to stick with a bad show even when it gets well past its prime, because I'm emotionally invested in it, so it might take some convincing to keep me from checking out season 5.

Women took over after S4 and as is common to their gender they wanted to "fix" Dexter, to "save" him, so they basically wrote a bunch of Fifty Shades-tier fanfiction where a variety of stronk womyn heal his psychosis with the power of love and soap opera drama. Everyone else saw the level of awfulness this resulted in and just decided to shut up and collect their paychecks.
S7 had some interesting ideas outside of Hannah, but really the final shot of the show should've been the baby covered in blood.
