Just got finished Season 1 of HBO's Rome. Loved it. What does /tv/ think of it? Is Season 2 just as good?
>>
Yes and no.
I'd say nothing really tops muh thirteen but it's still great.
>>
>>68609324
Loved it but 2 is something different.
Antony, Pullo and Vorenus are still based, but the rest of them, especially the new faggy Octavian ruin it IMO. Still great show though.
>>
s2 is not as good as s1 - you can really see them rushing to end the show

having said that, some of Rome's best moments happen in s2 - if you liked s1, you'll probably like s2

Right on. I liked Octavian's character development too, figured they'd turn him into a cunt next season though. Also is it safe to say that Anthony is GOAT?
>>
>>68609389
>implying Octavian isn't based as fuck

Mark Anthony

>desert his wife and child
>abandons his tradition
>desert his legions
>get bewitched by a whore

Stannis

>abandons family
>bewitched by a whore
>he's literally a puppet

Why does /tv/ admire these character?

until he started playing hide the cock with Cleopatra, the Romans loved Anthony, he apparently had a natural charisma.

accounts survived Augustus who basically had Livy writing puff pieces.

So he was probably even more charismatic than we known since Octavian was one ruthless cunt.
>>
>>68614243
Anthony started it. He wanted war and he got it
>Octavian was one ruthless cunt
wut
Please explain yourself?

Joe?
>>

>>Octavian was one ruthless cunt

You don't become Augustus and the first Roman Emperor by being nice.
>>
>>68614307

Augustus was our ideal of Machiavellian leadership, his statecraft and gamesmanship elevated him and his slow consolidation of power that created the seat of emperor.

I was using a 'anthony' line from the Roman show for flavor, he was seen as a dominating, ruthless figure that helped Shepard the empire towards great stability and peace. "You're a ruthless cunt, with a pen"
>>
>>68614367
He was ruthless to his enemies but Nice to Romans
>>68614380
Yes he was astute but he was literally loved rather than feared. The guy did a lot of shit. He brought peace to Rome after a century of war.and ended the corruption.

Caligula/Nero were ruthless
>>
>>68614593

depends how you see certain events or believe certain sources.

I think a large problem in any portrayal is Shakespeare, popularizing Gaius in such a way indirectly shone a bright light upon Augustus.
>>
You're allowed to make one season about any city from any historical period with the same quality as Rome, what do you choose?
>>
>>68614593
>but Nice to Romans

what are proscriptions?
>>
>>68614737

Peloponnese war era ancient Athens.

You have a shitload of famous people like Socrates, Alcibiades, Pericles, Aristophanes, Thucydides etc. Plus you could also give the Spartan perspective on the war.

either first Roanoke or maybe the burning of Thebes. Constantinople gets posted a lot but honestly the idea of muslims winning isn't that appealing to me.

A large scale, abbreviated showing of the reconquista maybe using Isabella going to deal with rebels.

so many ideas, a story about Olmec might be fun. or maybe a retelling of the epic of Gilgamesh but showing it more like a chinese warring states period and using Ur as the lens. A story about kaddesh maybe, not sure problem is with a budget that size you need to tell a story or you'll get the fate of Rome.

>having a major story about how socrates goes back to be murdered by his own people just to live up to his own ideals.

greeks love their tragedy.

Lol wasn't he the guy who killed and got lead poured in his brain or was that his brother?

That was his brother.

Tiberius just got beaten to death by an angry crowd IIRC

I would kill for a series like this

>The Persian Wars given full coverage
>Cimon's adventures and the growing imperialism of the Delian League
>Spartan autism
>Rise of the Hawks and fall of the Doves
>The eventual break up of Spartan / Athenian relations and Land Empire
>The plague and death of Pericles
>Losses at Syracuse
>Alcibiades defacing the Hemaea and cucking everyone.
>Tissaphernes fucking with the Spartans
>Athenians executing their own men and losing the war

What an underrated time period. Basically writes itself as a perfect war / human tragedy epic.
>>
>>68614737
Not a tv show but a historical epic about Xenophon's Ten Thousand would be boner inducing.
>>
>>68614893
