How did you feel about Quantum of Solace? I think it's criminally underrated, sitting at 58 on metacritic and 61 or so on RT.

People say it wasn't true to the Bond formula but that's one of the things I liked about it.

Everyone says its confusing and, honestly, I have to agree

There was a lot to like about it, but something about the story and the way it progressed was just confusing as fuck.

Part of the craft of making a film is making it coherent, and I just dont think they did an excellent job in that regard. Its a shame cause it had some great moments, characters, themes and locations. And two of the best bong girls.

It is underrated. It's certainly better than Mendez and his soapy bullshit mixed with capeshit-tier plots. It might just be the most operator-Bond there is.

Critics are a bunch of plebs anyway.
>>
>>68244098
Terribly so. Never understood why Brits in particular loathed this movie so much until I realized that a major premise of the initial plot - why Bond has to go rogue - is because the wee MI6 must eagerly bow to the demand of the almighty American CIA to stop pursuing Dominic Green. Looks like that hit too close to home for some.

Quantum the organization was gold, and far more threatening than spectre. It's absurd to retcon Quantum as a subsidiary of Spectre and not the other way around.

It's not that kind of movie. It's more about the spygames and the politics behind. What I like about it are the touches of realism by added different viewpoints. Like when Mr.White starts to laugh when M asks him about Quantum because so far, they've been paranoid as hell about being found.

The presentation of Quantum as a shadowy Spectre expy was done far better than, well, Spectre. It's the slow, understated reveal that absolutely sells Quantum as a real, global threat. A criminal network that's truly intangible and whose reach into the highest echelons of government power never has to be explicitly shown but feels all the more dangerous because the audience can't see it.

>"It's so amusing because we're on the other side thinking, 'oh the MI6 the CIA - they're looking over our shoulders, they're listening to our conversations', and the truth is you don't even know we exist."

Can you describe some confusing parts explicitly? I just have a hard time understanding this criticism. As I see it,

>bond immediately kidnaps guy who was handler of eyepatch man (end of royale)

>double agent that bond kills has money from same sack that lechiffre had and which just got given to a hit man in Haiti

>bond goes to Haiti, kills hit man and finds girl hit man was supposed to kill in brief case that was delivered to hit man

>girl got sent to hit man. She ditches bond after finding out "he's" supposed to kill her

>bond follows her to dock and sees Dominique

The rest is kind of simple, right?

Anything can be a subsidiary of anything if they want to write it that way, but I agree that the secretly evil environmentalist thing was much better than the organization with politicians planted in each country (apparently, the currently flavor what with winter soldier and some other movies going that route).
>>
>>68246058

the latter is easier for normies to grasp between fistfuls of popcorn
>>
It's my favorite of the Craig Bond films - it builds on the work done by Dalton and turns Bond into an interesting, broken character rather than some adolescent wish fulfillment fantasy. QoS is a sparse film - it strips away nearly everything unnecessary and reveals Bond as a psychopath whose lifestyle is ultimately unfulfilling. Stopping sinister conspiracies is not fun, and people who travel around the world killing other people are usually not mentally healthy. QoS was exceptional at challenging the traditional Bond narrative and the audience that demands it.

It's a shame they undid all of that progress with the next few films.

it was 2008, i would argue that directors were still ironing the kinks out of nu-school directing
>>
>>68245373

This is what I liked most about the villain. Of course the villain wasn't physically intimidating - corrupt money managers rarely are. They really sold the fact that Quantum was a realistic threat. No one cares about Bolivian water rights, so it's feasible to think that the conspiracy we saw in the movie happened all the time.

An evil organization would not have Christoph Waltz chewing up the scenery in his desert surveillance center.

The airplane dialogue between Mathis and Bond is the exact kind of content that sets CR and QoS almost as a different film series than Skyfall and Spectre

Casino is objectively better than qos. Turned a fuckin card game into the most intense shit that ever happened, and the pacing was perfect. The viewer is fully immersed in the card game so that the crazy shit that happens in each intermission of play is almost like a breath of fresh air.

I do like qos, but I think you're being a little reactionary to the plebs who don't like it.

That scene where Bond intimidates the organization at the opera house only to lead to a stare down with manlet is the best scene of the whole Craig run.

Really pissed me off how Skyfall completely ignored it, and while Spectre brings back Mr. White and ties up that loose end, it was ridiculous how they kept showing stuff from Casino and Skyfall whilst ignoring Quantum.

I don't think you're giving casino royale enough credit. They kill the girl at the end. It was certainly a grand departure from other bond films. And I agree with you, if quantum were just an extension of casino, that would suck. I like the broken bond in the movie. It just feels to me a little more repetitive than casino. In casino the initial scene was the flavoring, then there was the cat and mouse game with the guy in Bahamas, then the save the day scene at the airport, the card game, the stairwell fight that carried actual gravitas, and finally the torture scene. In quantum I felt like I was just seeing bond infiltrate a series of different locations in repetitive fashion. Kidnapping, killing the hit man, saving the girl, infiltrating the play, etc.
