Agreed on all points. The super artsy up-its-own-butt first several episodes of season 3 turned me off and I've yet to go back and finish it. I'm told it's worth it in the end, and season 2 sort of lost me at the beginning as well, so I'll get back to it eventually.
A shame it's done, there really wasn't anything else like it and it was refreshing to see a mainline network take some risks.

I met Mads at the Cannes Film Festival 2015. I was there with my film school, which I graduated from just recently. I believe he had hosted the awards.
When he came out from the afterparty the french papparazi started screaming his incorrectly pronounced name. A few of my friends simply yelled "Hej Mads!". He immediately heard us and yelled back "I hear someone is pronouncing my name correctly!"
He seemed super happy to see fellow Danes in such a place, and he talked with us for 5 minutes, and took pictures.

it's a tough one. interestingly, if it were a classic period piece, like a remake of Horror of Dracula (or others) with Lee, and was as art directed as lushly today as hammer used to go for back then, then I'd say Refn; this is because silence and stillness are phenomenally powerful, and nobody does it like he does these days. if not him, then give it to Robert Eggers...his dracula-boner is massive, and his pedigree is impressive.
