A strange tale of hubris right at the beginning. Here we see a guy who's so full of himself, he (perhaps constantly) boasts that he can work around any problem, because "[he's] Dunnhier", the legendary thief.
However, almost immediately after his first appearance, he is nonchalantly shot in the back. It really delivers Nolan's message about crime escalation perfectly; the low-life criminals in Gotham have no respect, even for other criminals and their previous merits. Even Dunnhier, with all his skills, is expendable.

I always got the impression that the bank had a pre-existing feud with a criminal – a boss of the underworld – named Ewan. Perhaps Ewan had tried to steal from them before, or perhaps he had made threats about doing so.
The fact that Manager jumps to the conclusion that they're being robbed by Ewan really effectively communicates how radically different Joker is to common criminals. Ordinary folk aren't ready for the likes of him. To them, the only criminal they can conceive of is the likes of Ewan.
It hearkens back to that line in the trailer:

Why was Hee Zowt still in school at his age? And why did the bus driver seem okay with a student robbing the bank?
I'm beginning to think that Zowt didn't have the opportunity to get an education while he was a child. Maybe his lack of support drove him into his life of crime.
I guess Zowt decided to start his education much later in life. Of course, he didn't fit in with the kids. The bus driver felt sympathy for Zowt and so let him get away with these things. Of course, that was the wrong decision, seeing as Zowt betrayed him in the end.
What a heartbreaking story. Guy shows sympathy to an unloved kid and it leads him onto a path of crime culminating in his demise. It just goes to show that crime doesn't pay.
