Capes are extremely impractical in combat.

Why do superheroes wear them?

I get it, they look cool and are a cultural icon of the good old days of superhero comics.

But why would Nolan's Batman wear a cape?

Wasn't Nolan all about "muh realism" in his films?
>>
>>68215126
Gliding. It had protection from certain elements. Distraction.
>>
>>68215126
you took the one guy that actually uses it.
>>
well batman's cape is fire retardant and allows him to "fly"
>>
>>68215126
Have you seen Nolan's Batmen?
He fucking glides all over the place.
Also he's a BAT MAN
>>
>>68215126
Batman actually uses his cape though
It has some bullshit comic science so you need to hold some suspension of disbelief, but he can make it harden somewhat when he's falling so it allows him to glide. Also I believe its able to be used for protection? It's at least fireproof
>>
This is a fucking retarded thread.

What would /tv/ call super hero movies if there were no capes?
>>
>why does nolan's batman wear a cape?
>the movies literally show you that he can run an electric current through the cape to make the material harden
>he uses this to glide around in the movie because of this
Guessing you never watched the movies and just wanted to shitpost, huh?

Because of the theatrical aspect. Also he can use the cape to glide.
>>
>>68215339
supershit
>>
>>68215126
the practical uses of batman's cape has already been addressed here, but as for other superheros who wear capes, they do it for the same reason any caped character wears them: capes are cool. they just are. they look awesome. i bet 8 out of 10 people think positively of capes. there's just something about them that's awesome.
>>
>>68215126
Actually capes feature in historical treatises.
>>
>>68215246
In the comics, he's also used it as an offensive weapon. There are weights sewn into the tips.
>>
>>68215502
Because Batman is a very theatrical character. He needs to look supernatural to scare his enemies and the cape is a big part of that.
>>
>>68215576
It's also fire-proof.
>>
>>68215563
I'm wearing mine right now.
>>
>>68215502
wouldn't that be like designing a retractable parachute? Once it's all out there it would be hard to quickly stuff back in
>>
>>68215502
Because it's more convenient. Since he uses his cape in fights (fireproof and to disorient), it would be easier to just use it instantly, than having to press a button to activate it first.
>>
>>68215339

Because when comics first started, it was easier to convey movement during flight with a cape. Nerdsync's done a few videos on the history behind superhero costumes

You can use it to hide your movements, blind the enemy, wrap it around your arm and use it kind of like a shield. It's also just practical whenever you aren't in combat.

For blending in the dark (as far as Batso is concerned). But he wasn't big on stealth in the Nolan movies, despite being a fucking Ninja Master and all...

For Supes (if we take the Supergirl series explanation), it's for flying stability.

Magneto wears a cape because he's a boss and you're not. You fucking capeless hairless ape!

The Latin word for cape, cappa, forms the basis for the word “escape,” which comes from ex cappa. “To escape”.

From the early days of the cape, when Latin was still spoken on the streets, capes spoke of battle, status, and statuses in battle. Military commanders of the Roman Empire donned paludamentum—a long, flowing cape fastened at one shoulder—as part of their ceremonial battle preparations. Centurions fighting under their command got to wear capes, too, but had to settle for the sagum, a less majestic, less flowy version that fastened with a clasp across the shoulders.

Over the centuries, the cape and the sword came to be regarded as a package deal.

Agreed. Capes are ridiculous and look stupid.

Nolan had the right idea with the realistic TDK suit with the cape back pack when he's in Hong Kong. That's how it should have been. Capes just aren't practical.

Look how much cooler Batman looks with the cape retracted into a functional military back pack. Sad thing is, in Begins they mention how they can make it be any shape with the memory fabric, yet they show him always having it flowing behind his back. Makes no sense.

Fuck off, capes make for great visuals, something Nolan never got.

Love how he sperged out about practicality and tactical, realistic bullshit when his Catwoman runs around and fights in unpractical high heels and long hair. It's a joke. Cape shit is fantastical in nature. Sure, a little bit of grounding and realism doesn't hurt to make sure the world is accessible to audiences. You can go TOO far though. It should be all about balance.

A Batman without a cape isn't Batman.

Batman's entire schtick is about style. That's why he's Batman and not just Some Dude, it's psychological warfare.

Exactly. Batman need the threaticallity.
The moment the that facade fades away, he's just a man wearing a bat costume.
That's why in Arkham Knight when everyone discover the identity of batman, he needs to retire since no one is scared of him anymore.

how about the fact that it requires a constant supply of electricity to stay in any other shape than free flowing.
and even if he had the power source to do so, what shape would it be in? a box? fold into an origami crane?
>>
>>68215126

Cape breaks his outline so he can hide better.

He glides with it.

It is scary as fuck in the dark and makes some people think he is not even a person.

It protects him from fire and other hazards.

You suck, capes are awesome, get some style.
