it's because sci fi (and fantasy and horror) have to maintain some kind of gravitas to work well. comedy doesn't allow that normally.
for the opposite reason, by far the most common form of comedy is based on banal everyday life and relationships.

u stole my post
Am I really the only one that can think of some? Or is it that any movie I now present will be considered bad?
I would also include Time Bandits from Mr. Gilliam.
Does BttF count? Apparently time travel is funny.

What's really sad is how badly black comedies have done with sci-fi.
>Meteor Man
>Eddie Murphy's Nutty Professor
>Pluto Nash
>late Eddie Murphy in general
Black people are funny. They've shown this. Why can't they be funny in space?

>sci fi (and fantasy and horror) have to maintain some kind of gravitas to work well
But that's where the comedy comes from. Showing the cautious or inspiring gravitas in a cynical, deadpan, or lampooned way.
Idiocracy is a good example of post-scarcity, post-labor society like Star Trek, except instead of everyone nobly pursuing science and art, everyone sits around like lumps watching TV.
Or just taking the basic comedy outline, and slapping in a robot, like pic related. (But it's OK, because it was the 80s and things were awesome by definition.)

It's a bit like Red Dwarf meets Star Trek.
I liked it, although I might be the only one.

It is space fantasy.
The 80s actually had a number of comedies with sci-fi plot elements. Can't say all of them were good.
