In the movie he constantly look up to his father or try to behave like him and throughout the movie he constantly save female figure as if he was constantly trying to save his mom.
When he went to kill Superman and Superman was there on the ground uttering Martha's name Superman reminded him of his father laying there on the ground uttering his mom's name. So when Lois showed and explained the situation he then realized that he had become his worst enemy: the man that killed his parents. That's why he threw the spear away and jumped on the chance to save Superman's mom.
