It was a BBC Radio adaptation in the 1980s, and it was fantastic.
It was a full-cast dramatization so it was cut down to the story and characters rather than an attempt to include ALL of the lore, but what was there was intended to be as faithful as possible. They skip over a few things, but not as much as the films do.
I can't recommend it enough if you want a "distilled" version of The Lord of the Rings. Unless you want an American action film series, in which case go for the films (and I don't mean this as a criticism, they're great for what they are).

Also, I may be drunk, your second statement doesn't make any sense. 'Without being memed' doesn't make any sense from a sentence structure type of deal. What does it mean to be memed? A community is required to create a meme, so what does Jackson's decision have to do with it? If you mean 'appeal to a wider audience, get them something to talk about' well then yeah, that's one of the goals of making a good movie. It was damn effective from a spooky perspective, and very memorable.
