Okay /tv/, lets decide it once and for all
Which trilogy is the superior
original movies only, the hobbit and the prequels/episode 7 dont count

LOTR by far.
Star Wars never had a scene as good as this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zjm1DRMEyUQ
Comparing the high art that is LOTR to lowest common denominator bubble gum tripe trash like Star Wars is indicative of a deficient intellect.
if you ask someone who is 50 they will probably say stars wars, if you ask someone who is 20 they will probably say LotR
most people here are closer to 20 than 50
i do like LotR better though
You're kidding right?
One is the adaptation of novels. One is an original film trilogy.
LotR books > Star Wars > LotR movies.
LotR has shaped fantasy.
Star Wars has shaped Scifi.
The LotR movies didn't change the game the way Star Wars did for the film industry, for better or for worse.

>original film trilogy
>original
Thanks anon, I needed that
>>68151770
We're talking about quality of the films, not their influence on the industry
Lotr no question
>>68152023
TPM was more similar to Kurosawa than the original trilogy, if that's what you're getting at.
>>68152136
the books are still better than the films. I don't know what you're getting at.
>>68152433
>The LotR movies didn't change the game the way Star Wars did for the film industry
I was referring to that line
>>68151366
dont see how is this even a contest
>>68152558
>>The LotR movies didn't change the game the way Star Wars did for the film industry
they did tho, (for better or worse), without LOTR the big studios would never start finansic huge blockbuster adaptation and niche genres like fantasy or even capeshit
as much as i love Star Wars and would willingly suck George Lucas' dick, LotR is the better trilogy.
may god have mercy on my soul
>>68152619
>dont see how is this even a contest
forgot my picture
>>68151520
Honest question as someone who has never read the books, are the movies better?
>>68152842
No.
But the films are the best adaptation of a book ever
>>68152842
You have no idea how much was cut out of the books.
>>68152842
Yes.
>>68152842
>>68152941
cut out of the movies. However you would phrase this.
The books have far more content going on, namely things that answer big questions, including memes like the eagles.
>>68151366
LOTR is betterbut the hobbit trilogy is even worse than the prequels
Mfw lotr man children are carbon copies of the star wars man children from back in the day
>>68153043
go away TFAggot. You still haven't made up for the prequels. Those movies are the sole reason I voted for LOTR.
>>68153041
That's not fair anon. Auj and dos were good the trilogy was let down by the inclusion and existence of bofa
>>68151366
How does it feel that in ~4-5 years time people will only remember LotR as "that ancient, worse version of Warcraft"?
>>68153112
Warcraft has not heart
>>68151366
LOTR, you dip
>>68153112
Feels good senpai
>>68153165
>>68153112
I cant wait for the superior fantasy desu
>>68153112
>implying people won't completely forget about Warcraft within a month of it's release
>>68152704
In all honesty, I would follow this faggot to the gates of hell
>>68153112
>video game movies
Back to the Future
>>68152842
No, but the movies are still great.
Polar opposite of something like the GoT / ASOIAF "adaptation"
>>68152842
The books allude to the rich lore of lotr which really elevates the books
>>68153094
DoS was the worst one.
>>68153463
Bitch pls.
Dos was miles better than bofa. Smaug and his interaction with bilbo alone >>> anything from bofa.
Smaug flying towards laketown was a great Cliff hanger
>>68153547
Was DOS the one with the barrels and all the shoehorned elves and legolas riding a horse down a bridge? Do I need to post it?
>>68153691
As bad as those were it was still better than the copy paste elves, "his name you have to find out", all cgi battles, "why does it hurt" and that faggot grima wannabe
The only good moments from bofa were the Acorn scene and Thorins death
George RR Tolkein was a great author, but the Zahn Trilogy was better than LotR by far.
More iconic heroes
Better arch villain (Thrawn >>>>> Sauron)
>>68153094
>That's not fair anon. Auj and dos were good
>>68153812
Im not saying DOS is worse than BOFA, desu I haven't seen BOFA because fuck that shit. But none of teem are good movies.
While star wars are my favorite of the two for pure enjoyment, I can't dispute that lord of the rings is the better trilogy. The depth of world building, character motivations, dialogue, and hell, the OST are incredible. And then there's scenes like the charge of the rohirrim:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l8yOdAqBFcQ
Gives me chills when Theodin starts the charge, every time.
Or gandalfs speech to comfort Pippin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rag_9J1ZC2g
Or boromirs death final scene with aragorn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9skYkQfAwus
I'm not sure there will be another fantasy epic this pitch perfect and well casted in our time.

That movie looks more soulless and generic than the aragon movie, /tv/s contrarian "shitty movies are kino" meme is retarded.
>>68153974
>Thrawn
>Villain
He literally did nothing wrong, you bastard
While I admit that I really like both, I really dislike medieval fantasy, so Star Wars gets my vote. Also Han Solo > every LoTR character, except maybe for Gimli. Prove me wrongYou might
>But anon, Star Wars is fantasy
In space, which makes it acceptable
>>68151520
scenes like this really hit home about how much tolkien was influenced by WWI/WWI
so many sentiments expressed in this scene could apply there
Let's get real about the characters in LotR, though. The only characters with any actual story arc were the hobbits, who were the audience proxy. Aragorn was a plot point, and the other characters were stock archetypes.
I think you can legitimately argue that Luke, Han, Vader, and Sheev were better characters than anyone in Tolkein's series.
We tend to treat Tolkein's characters more seriously, because they seem more timeless, and it's easy to forget they were only created 20 years apart from each other. Think about that. When Star Wars was made, Lord of the Rings was about as recently made as Harry Potter is today.
>>68151770
Star Wars banked way more on the timeliness of its release than the actual quality of the flims itself in terms of how influential it was
I like both for different reasons.
As much as I love Star Wars, LotR is a masterpiece.
>>68153112
Holy shit man.
8/10, made me reply
