Talk about films. Feel free to be pretentious by the standards of capeshit addicts. Perhaps discuss a film that doesn't make it's way on to this board regularly. There are still some genuine film lovers here. Raise your voices.

I enjoyed this film's quiet self-certainty. I had heard people complaining that it marked Kiarostami's move away from the traits that made his films interesting in the first place. I'm not sure what to make of that.

Talk about anything at all, eh?
Well how about Zatoichi? Lovable tramp wanders Japan and rights wrongs.
>>
>>68138048

Been a long time since I watched that... I actually think I might have only seen a remake of some kind? The premise is great.
>>
>>68138085
>since I watched that
Which one? There's like 20 of them plus the remake.
I only ever saw the first four, need to go fix that.
>>
>>68138048
I watched the Kitano one and it was very good.
>>
>>68138115

I had no idea there were so many remakes. So the original is a series of films? I presume they're worth a look?

Pretty sure the remake I saw was from 2003.
>>
>>68138197
There are even Chinese bootleg Zatoichi movies.
>>
>>68138183
I prefer the original stuff.
>>68138197
>so many remakes
There's only one remake. The others are sequels It's a series of films plus a TV-show.
>I presume they're worth a look
YES.

I recommend this movie. It's Little House by Yamada Yoji. It has music, production design and trivia.

Above all it insisted on the idea that people in the past think differently about relationship
>>
>>68138236

Ah right, now I'm following. I'll download the original tonight.

I see that we have accidentally made a Japanese film theme.

Is there something specific about Japanese films that makes them attractive to Western viewers?

>inb4 otaku/weeaboo

There's actually quite a few Japanese classics I haven't seen. Tokyo Hotel sticks out as an example. I've also barely watched any Kurosawa films.

>Is there something specific about Japanese films that makes them attractive to Western viewers?

No, but there's something specific about you that makes them attractive to you: you're an autistic weeb.

*Tokyo Story

sorry
Tokyo hotel? I don't even...
>>
>>68138483
>barely watched any Kurosawa films
I could use Kurosawa as a tangent into Russian films. I've never seen Kurosawa's version but I really liked the original Dersu Uzala.
Russian cartographers are guided in the Siberian wilderness by an illiterate man who has lived his entire life in the wild. It's pretty comfy.
>Is there something specific about Japanese films that makes them attractive to Western viewers?
I dunno. What's good is good.
>>
>>68138483
I don't know westerners. I am not westerners.
>>

You win bro!

Manlet works as a headhunter for a company, has a huge house he can't afford and a gorgeous as fuck girlfriend with expensive tastes who doesn't know he's not as rich as he pretends to be. He makes extra money by moonlighting as a burglar of fine art.
Jamie Lannister is a former special forces soldier who is looking for a job and happens to own a famous, expensive painting. MC steals it.
Shit hits the fan and a manhunt begins. Literally, because there's a scene where the MC hides from a dog by diving in the shit in an outhouse
>>
>>68138615

>I could use Kurosawa as a tangent into Russian films.

Could you elaborate? Russian Cartographer film sounds good. I'll take a look.

>What's good is good.

True. I just wonder there isn't a hint of oriental fetish going on most of the time. I mean that in as neutral a sense as possible. Anyway, it's a throwaway question really. Just trying to get some people talking.
>>
>>68138873

Sold.
>>
>>68138876
>elaborate
What I'm saying is, Dersu Uzala was a Russian film that Kurosawa remade.
>>
>>68138003
That's the kind of film that makes escorting seem like a good profession to get into, hmm...
>>
>>68138970

Sorry, I think I read your comment incorrectly. I got the impression you were hinting at some strong link between Kurosawa and Russian cinema.
>>
Has anyone else seen the I, Claudius miniseries? Ten solid episodes of Roman hi-jinks, absolutely brilliant stuff.
>>
>>68139201
That was the link.
>>

i loved this film a lot, or at least i think i did

Another miniseries about Romans that I don't see get talked about is Masada.
It was presented in such a way that it seemed like the authors wanted you to root for the Jews, but the Roman characters were the only sympathetic ones and it worked completely backwards.
>>
>>68139282

I imagined you meant something more broad and thematic. Cheers for the recommendation.
>>
>>68139213

I've heard that this is brilliant. Claudius is certainly one of the more interesting emperors.
>>
>>68138483
It's an alien culture and race, as simple as that. It's interesting because it's different. Applies to Asian cinema in general, I suppose.
>>
>>68139320

What confuses you about how you feel?

>>68139377

Looks good too.
>>
>>68139526
It starts off at the latter years of Augustus (portrayed as a demented but jovial old man by BRIAN BLESSED) and ends at Claudius' death. Great scheming and likable cast.
>>
>>68139574

Yeah, I guess. It seems like there are more specific things that can be said about it. You think that say, Europeans and Americans receive both Chinese and Japanese cinema in the same generic "different cultures are interesting" way?
>>
>>68139377
>>68139625
Guess I'll do a pitch for Masada, too.

The series begins and ends with some Israeli propaganda showing their soldiers getting sworn in at the fortress of Masada and the narrator talks about the great heroic deeds that the Jews did there. Then the series goes on to show what actually happened and that stuff completely flies in the face of the propaganda.
Balthazar is a Jewish "freedom fighter" who raids grain silos and kills civilians and stuff like that while inciting Jewish rebellion against the Romans. Silva is the commander of a legion that was supposed to be sent back home but has to keep occupying Palestine because of the revolt. Topical?
Eventually Balthazar's rebels hole up in the fortress of Masada, and the majority of the series depicts the siege and the various goings-on involved in that.
Silva is constantly trying to talk things out and avoid the loss of human life, which makes him a pretty based commander.
>>
>>68139625
i was doing a joke about the theme of the movie, keep up
>>
>>68139905

Cheers. /tv/ needs more of this.
>>
>>68139977

Far too high-brow and subtle for me, friendo.

Have you watched many other Kiarostami films? I'm working my way through them at the moment.
>>
>>68140104
More of what?
>>
>>68139633

Blessed is a fucking animal. Three attempts to climb Everest. I think he was in his 60s at the time of his last try.
>>
>>68140278

Decent pitches. Pitches in general. You made me want to watch the series.
>>
>>68140403
Gee, thanks. Wish I had more.

This is the first Ouedraogo film I've watched. The simplicity bordered on being quaint at points, but I appreciated approach nonetheless.

I think it would be worth a second viewing

Anyone know movies like Margin Call that are paced so that they're constantly moving forwards without rushing or stagnating?
>>
>>68141387

Why not check out the rest of J.C. Chandor's films. They're not all the same, but he certainly does have an identifiable directing style.
>>
Anyone seen this? Thoughts?
>>
>>68141167
I liked it. It didn't seem terribly deep but I like the (campy? kitschy? I've never really found the right meaning of that word) gay biker nazi occultist imagery and music. It's all very proto-music video

I Will Follow Him best song, mostly for the Les Rallizes Denudes song it inspired
>>
>>68142800

I liked it too. Seemed to be a bit of gay wish fulfillment to me.

Can't remember much about the music other than enjoying it.

I get the impression that Anger's films might more sense if you've watched a fair few of them.
