American, just never had a chance to see it. Growing up we had the first 20 minutes or so taped off from a tv airing but then it cut out.
Why does ET get sick. and die? Didn't see a good explanation for that.

But it made shitloads of money in its time.
And in the same year (1982) The Thing and Blade Runner flopped.
The public always had shit taste in matters of Sci Fi.
