He was introduced as Don's rival when he was in his alcoholic phase, then the writers must have forgot about him since in 3 seasons the only subplot he got was that one about his father wanting to fuck hookers together, and in the end he was written off with that dumb cumputer induced insanity and ear cutting.

Ginsberg first appeared in series 5 when Don wasn't drinking as much, I have no idea what you mean about his dad wanting to fuck hookers with him and if you re-watch it's really obvious he's always been crazy.
I think of him as a counter to Sal and Bob, it's really obvious to the audience that they're both gay, and the audience gets to jerk themselves off over how much more enlightened we are about that sort of thing now/how clever they are for working out something the characters can't. Then they introduce Ginsberg and the audience completely misses that he has serious mental problems and is also gay/bi to top it off.
Re-watch Far Away Places from S5 if you want absolute proof that he was always nuts.
