>ITT: anime features with arthouse qualities
Starting out with one of the classics, possibly the closest thing there is to mainstream anime kino. I only used to remember Akira from my teens as a convoluted storytelling mess, at least before re-watching it a few moments ago for the first time in half a decade or so and oh my god, was I wrong. There are a lot of genuinely great moments and themes in this, like the representation of human development and the death of morality and its parallels to the technocratic rise of post-war Japan. If something, it still feels really convoluted at times, Otomo was trying to pack an unfinished series of four fat mangas into a two hour long film, but even that ends up working as fuel for the completely anarchic setting. Oh, and dat amazing art direction, the color palette is stunning.
By the way, how's Ghost in the Shell in comparison to Akira? I've been wanting to watch it for a while and the fact that there seems to be a debate on personal identity and possible Hegelian influence with the whole "geist" thing really peeks my interest.
>>68088373
Ghost in the Shell is somewhat less visually compelling, but there is a heavy dose of Western philosophical thought put into it. I rate them both about the same.
>>68088426
Sounds good, might as well check it out ASAP. I've seen the introduction sometime ago and already fell in love with the shot in pic related, that cinematography is amazing.

Jesus christ OP you pleb
JIN-ROH: THE WOLF BRIGADE
It's a psychological drama about an elite soldier who becomes obsessed with a woman who appears identical to a young girl who blew herself up rather than be taken prisoner by his squad.

>>68088373
how are you meant to distinguise that ア from a フ without the romaji
>>68088793
context?
>>68088734
>Neo Tokyo
Kek, funny thing, I watched Akira before making this thread in the sequence of re-watching Neo Tokyo. Construction Cancellation Order is like Rod Serling made an anime, it could totally be a Twlight Zone episode.
>>68088861
Katakana characters
Akira is アキラ, which is written in the read blood marker on top of the 'romaji' (roman letters) "AKIRA"
The way that ア is written makes it look a lot like フ, which is another completely different katakana character completely

>>68088883
Running Man and CCO still hold up very well. I still remember seeing Running Man for the first time on Liquid Television. Shit blew my mind, I'd never seen such detailed animation before that.
>>68089219
>get off of 4chan weebs
Ayyyylmao
>>68089075
Anime has its fair share of shit, but capeshit is the absolute lowest.
>>68089338
this is exactly what a selfloathing anime autist would say
>>68088373
Akira is my favorite movie of all time. I never understood why people the story and writing messy/convoluted.
I only read the first volume of the manga so far, and it was mediocre.
The extra detail and slower pacing don't add much and I feel like a lot of the changes made for the movie were better, such as no mention of anybody's parents and Tetsuo and Kaneda being closer friends.
>>68088718
>>68088777
Jin-Roh isn't worth watching.
Last act ruins it all and before that the movie is only okay.
>>68089415
About half of the manga takes place in between Tetsuo escaping the hospital and the climax of the film, and covers years of time. The film is INCREDIBLY condensed. Not that there's anything wrong with that - it's definitely great. Just worth noting that it's a very different story.

I'm going to take the bait because there are people who genuinely think like these anons.
Claiming that there's no such thing as arthouse anime because of the mainstream appeal to neckbeards is the same as saying there's no arthouse cinema because of the mainstream appeal to the average moviegoer who only cares about momentary hedonism over any sort of substance. Indeed, the vast majority of anime that reaches international acclaim is obnoxiously bad, but if you just spend a little time looking throughout the listings of Japanese film festivals you'll quickly figure out not every story told through anime consists of waifus and moeshit.
>>68088373
Tokyo godfathers was pretty gud desu senpai.
>>68089550
I'm yet to watch that movie. Already watched Paprika, Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress. Fucking love Paprika.
A shame Satoshi had to die...
>>68088373
>Akira Movie
>Arthouse
It's Nip capeshit at best.
>>68089541
Masashi sounds like such a cool and modest guy, a pity I really can't get into Naruto. It's just so obnoxiously shitty.
>>68089476
Yeah, I need to read the other 5 volumes. I'm just saying that from what I've read so far, I prefer movie's story.
One thing I did like about the manga though is Kaneda's thick as fuck nurse girlfriend.

>>68089721
I remember her. The things that really stay with me though are (i) that scruffy-looking individual who's probably a junkie and spends all his time lounging around on the front steps of the school (ii) Yamagata being as thick as pig shit and constantly flubbing simple words (iii) that first clear look at Kei's face, which was fantastically drawn.
>>68088777
> check out The Wings of Honneamise,
Anime kino tbqh
>>68089476
The Colonel was so based in the manga. A true goat.
>>68089527
ANIME is even looked down upon by nipps, don't think it's japanese art, because you'll be laughed at when you finally go to japan.
>>68090181
I don't remember any of that shit.
This is the Kei shot you're talking about, right?
>>68090412
nips look down on otakus, not anime in general
>>68090441
>Being this of a delusional weeb
nipps hate anime, retard
You can stop using the word kino in a serious context now. Thanks
How come there's no movie adaptation of Domu?

>>68090370
no payoff though, plot wise. the finale is visually great but i was hoping for something more substantial story-wise.
>>68090422
That's the one.
>>68088373
>No Evangelion in this thread
FuckAkira is still better desu
I could go into my favourite Anime series, but I've only seen about 8though disturbingly I really like all of themso I won't talk about shit I'm not well versed in.
>>68090412
The anime industry is really shameful, and so is its public. However, there have been great films and series from various authors thanks to the work of producers like Masao Murayama, whose company ended up bleeding fucking money because it didn't adapt to the tropes.
It's like saying Hitchcock, De Palma or Wilder are shit because Holywood makes a really insane amount of shit.
Using kino for anything in english is just fucking ridiculous, though. Stop using memes for actual serious things you're talking about, jesus christ.
>>68090617
which eight?
>>68090542
I know, but it hurts to leave them out
>>68090470
But anon, >>68090441 is correct, no one in Japan fucking looks down on what's literally just a form of filmmaking, what they look down upon is fat weebs who spend all their day jacking off to animated grills and contributing virtually nothing to the technological, cultural or intellectual development of the country. Like the other post said, there are a shitload of anime movies in Japanese film festivals, the art medium itself is as respected as regular animation in western countries.
>>68090649
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
One Punch Man
Attack on Titan
Watamote
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Steins;gate
Death Note
Cowboy Bebop
I'll probably watch League of Galactic Heroes next.
So beautiful
I would watch mroe anime if it was like this instead of little girls with huge heads and cat tails doing dump shit
>>68090625
But anon the kino meme is hilarious. Especialy when applied to capeshit.
>>68089994
Redline isn't arthouse in the least, it's just pure kickass
>>68090684
>fat weebs who spend all their day jacking off to animated grills and contributing virtually nothing to the technological, cultural or intellectual development of the country
Some people just can't win. As matters stand I don't see that they really deserve to be shit on for recognizing how whatever "contributions" they might have to make aren't worth shit and the country's no worse off for them not making the attempt.
>>68090719
believe it or not, blame disney. big eyes started in mainstream cartoons with them, then in 52 astro boy sealed the deal forever more. bad times
>>68090719
There's plenty of anime that isn't moeshit. You're just too lazy to look for it.
>>68090796
Not enough of it.
>>68090801
Dandy's a total arse and you know what? I'd like him a lot less if he weren't.
>>68090886
That's true. It's inundated with shit to a ridiculous degree.
>>68090796
Bit I want to whinge about moeshit. WHY CAN'T YOU LET ME LIVE?
>>68088781
mind game was pretty great too
>>68090546

Did you even see the film?
>>68090916
>>68090956
Ryuichi Sakamoto's Fade playing in the background as you see Shiro's planet for the first time still gets me.
How does it feel that the best capeshit is an anime movie tv?
