BvS should have been DC's equivalent to Civil War in the same way. But by making it the 2nd movie in the DC universe it doesn't make sense or have the same weight behind it. Batman and Superman had known each other for 20 years or so by the time of the Dark Knight Returns, and the JLA had already been forcibly disbanded for years. The cartoon treated their villains horribly proving anon's point. The only villains used were Superman and Batman villains and their lost all their edge.

Well the issue with anything involving the Justice League will always be coming up with enemies that even stand a chance against the likes of Superman and WW. JL and JLU did a pretty admirable job.
