I was really impressed how good the show was, but still, couldn't keep myself very much interested in it, having read the books beforehand.
Also, Amos was criminally miscast.
No one is discussing it because it came out at a time when everyone thinks SyFy puts out shitting shows.
It's a great show that will most likely be discussed a lot more once season 2 is about to start and the 1st season is on netflix.

I've only watched the show and I thought the actor did a great job because I started out thinking he was some kind of meme badass antihero like Jayne from Firefly, but by the end I understood that he was completely deranged and dysfunctional and in every action he took he was just doing his best to try to act like a facsimile of a human being.

The character itself was quite well played. I'm sure he'll become even more empathazable as we get to know more about his origins (in fact, in the last book, Nemesis Games, he's really the best POV char).

I'm unsure what to think about this show overall. Production values were through the roof, detective in space was sweet, it was somewhat hard sci-fi (ignoring the noise and sound in space, obviously) but what really puts it in the 'meh' category for me is the goddamn ending.
Why the fuck would you go almost hard sci-fi andthen introduce fucking aliens?
And I've been told that these bastards are some sort of FTL and more wonky shit to arrive, making it less hard sci-fi.
And that Ambassator seems like a good character (she's a good actress) but without knowing her relationships with other people and not enough worldbuilding on earth and mars, there's little to show her importance.
The detective is sweet but once you get a PI out of his city, where he knows everyone and has the most influence (taking him out of his element), he stops being interesting. Weaving in the crowd, his people and connection, is the strong suit of detective noir. Without that, it's boring.
Having him being out of his element will only make him a weak character later on.
So really, the only thing good about The Expanse is the production value.
