The ANH novelization expands on the movie massively, and the writer directly consulted with Lucas. So that's worth getting.
I can see Vader being in it in the third act and especially at the very and where the remaining rebels that are alive try to escape some imperial installation.

A minor but important part of what made ANH great was the attention to detail in the ship roles. Even if they hadn't fleshed out the Rebel and Imperial fully yet, there still were unique, memorable ships with their own roles (e.g. TIE Bombers, Y-Wings).
