There was a nice callback to Terminus when Rick mentioned that the Saviors were shooting at their feet. Every other road was pretty well blocked but it seemed like the chain of walkers was a purposeful path of least resistance so Rick's group would go through that one when they got to it (whether that was the 4th road they tried or the 1st) and none of the others.
He did a fine job with what he was given, I just feel bad for him that his big moment was completely overshadowed by AMC suits who ruined the episode in editing.

I thought it was kind of weird how quiet and intimate his whole speech was. Negan is a big boisterous fuck, and he's putting on a show for his followers. He shouldn't just be murmuring to Rick. Where was the deranged sense of fun? Negan is the big alpha dog and he loves being the top cock ready to fuck somebody's day up. He should have been having the time of his life there, but he was relatively somber.
