We never knew how Saul and Mike became who they were in Breaking Bad. We knew how Walt, Jesse, Gus, etc got to where they were, but Mike and Saul were ambiguous. So that's the point of Better Call Saul. We'll also see what Saul does during Breaking Bad besides interacting with Walt and Jesse, since he was more of a side character.
But Better Call Saul is really boring despite that. The characters are good, the setup is much more lighthearted than Breaking Bad, following Mike brings in some excitement, but it's been two seasons now and we're not getting much closer to seeing the transformation from Jimmy McGill to Saul Goodman. The plot moves way too slowly, and all these law shenanigans and characters like Kim, Chuck and Hamlin are irrelevant by the time of Breaking Bad anyway.

the show is a failure in every aspect. it's not as funny as people expected it to be, and the dramatic parts have nothing behind it, they had to inject Mike into the mix to suck in the breaking bad crowd with all the underworld druggie shit. the only thing the show has going for it is MUH CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, as everyone likes to point out... but really, the character development just isn't cutting it anymore, it's dry and repetitive. it's not getting to the fucking point and keeps dragging.
the whole problem is the premise of the goddamm show. theres only so much you can do with Saul. hes a scumbag sleazy lawyer... whoopty fucking do. did he really deserve an entire fucking back story show? nope. Better Call Saul is an abomination.
It's literally as if AMC realized that Mad Men and Breaking Bad were completed, and all they had left as a network identity was the "channel that has that zombie show on it".
So they decided to pay VINCE a ton of money and begged him to make Better Call Saul and told him that they wanted the Mad Men crowd as well as retain the Breaking Bad crowd. Vince at the time only envisioned a Saul spinoff as a simple comedy sitcom show, but with all that money suddenly on his front lawn he had to rush a product annually that tries to satisfy two different audiences at once and manages to not fully satisfy either.
You can even see the literal split with the Mike "JUST CAMEO OUR SHOW UP" Storyline/Jimmy "OFFICE DIALOGUE" Storyline trying to cater to these two crowd segments.
All in all, Better Call Saul is a failure because it tries to do two different shows at the same time.
