Honestly, so much happens in the pilot to Breaking Bad and so much ground is covered within the premise compared to the rest of the series that it's pretty much better than the whole show itself. It's like a small movie and by the end of this first episode nothing else needs to be said, especially with how long winded the rest of the series is.

It's surprising that Breaking Bad pilot's is so good, considering that next 2 and half seasons suck, but then it becomes good again
Utopia was good, half the characters introduced end up dead or mutilated and several of the big mysterious questions that other shows would have let linger for half a season to generate hype are just answered outright, it sets itself up as ballsy and just ramps it up as things progress.
The only thing I didn't like was them trying to do the thing where online text pops up in reality every time someone is at a computer so you don't have to have an awkward shot of the screen/have the character awkwardly say aloud what they're reading, which presumably they got some shit for because it never came up again.

Twin Peaks is my favourite show and I've seen the whole series 5 times. Although, I'd argue that The Pilot is both the worst episode of the 1st season and the worst Lynch episode. While it establishes all the big players, setting up a number of subplots, i think that it isn't as refined as the following episodes. A few things stick out as a bit hokey for Lynch. It could have been trimmed a little bit.

Yeah, naw, fuck you. Don't care what Chase has said about his regrets about the pilot, what he wishes he could have changed. Everyone I've shown the pilot to has been instantly hooked. No other pilot really comes close imo. Breaking Bad's is very strong. Mad Men's too, and Boardwalk.
But the Sopranos set the tone. The narrative framing of the show is god tier, untouchable. Those first scenes of a sullen Tony in Melfi's office, explaining his world view are absolutely magnificent. A tremendous episode from start to finish.

What makes it a great pilot is the feeling of momentum it gives, but the writers and showrunners knew that you can't escalate shit too quickly.
Any amateur show crew would've turned Vic Mackey into Dexter, someone that just murders people left and right. Vic's kill count throughout the series is realistic, and every kill/death in The Shield hits hard.

Luckily I finished it a few days later, and now it's one of my favorite shows.
The Walking Dead pilot was nothing special. Basically just a mash up of scenes/situations you'd see in any zombie movie. I struggled to get through it and gave up on the show after 2-3 episodes. Boring shit.
