Even Stoker's Dracula diverged heavily from the folklore. Making vampires pale, giving them fangs, requiring them to be invited in, turning into bats, having hypnotic abilities, those were all additions by Stoker.
Your average Slavic folklore vampire was the ruddy-faced walking corpse of a peasant, mysteriously appearing after he was dead and causing some of his family and friends to die mysteriously each night. Their main supernatural powers were somehow getting around unseen and draining people's blood without obviously damaging them. Sometimes they turned into animals or caused bad weather, but that usually wasn't the focus.

I don't know what you mean by accurate, but my favorite portrayal of vampires came from 30 Days of Night. The first film was good. The second was pretty trash. I read the comics after, and while their stories diverge greatly, I still really enjoyed them.
I think the appeal is that they are truly monsters. They can only be mistaken for humans from a distance or at a glance. They even behave like feral beasts while retaining their intelligence. They are truly irredeemable and absolutely terrifying. There is no Dracula bullshit romance drama. All they want to do is feed, as it should be.
