Now, I don't know how much of this is a stretch considering I made it up-- but an interpretation could be the fall of civilizations in lieu of equality between sexes.
Before anyone jumps down my throat- just think about it, a world where women just become men. There are very few females in this movie and without their producing of offspring, everyone loses hope.
One girl gets pregnant, randomly, seemingly miraculously, cute little "traditional nativity analog"- the guy has to do all the heavy lifting because he's protecting a woman. Not that she's not stronk, but she's the actual vessel for a miracle so she NEEDS to be protected. His duty is sortof as her bullet sponge until they can complete their journey.
He also sacrifices himself in the end, and before he dies, she tells him she'll name the baby Dylan after his lost kid. He gets to die knowing that at least a version of his offspring will carry on a legacy (his legacy) and the mother fulfills her duty to be a goddamn mother and take care of it.
All I'm saying (sorry if this came out jumbled) is that a motif for the film could be "returning to traditional expectations for our genders"
As in, maybe its not bad to be Male or Female, Mother or Father, just acknowledge your responsibility in that role.

Overpopulation doesn't have anything to do with there being enough physical space, but the resources needed to sustain everyone. If anything, concentrating populations together will be a good thing since it makes distributing resources easier.
