Quantum of Solace tried to be Bourne and for the most part, it succeeded. But it's a movie that's far better appreciated on a small screen than on a big screen.
Skyfall was a step in a different direction. I don't know who thought Mendez was a good idea, his best movie is a moody piece about being tired of life and boy, does it show in both Skyfall and Spectre. The plot was quite blatantly stolen from capeshit. The visuals... there might be people who like them but James Bond is really not a vehicle for the visuals. The cheap nostalgia didn't help either and trying to link all the movies together was a disaster.
I am a pretty unobservant oblivious bastard who usually notices and realizes critique of films later.

I didn't hate QoS nearly as much as this film and you're right about QoS better suited for small screen.
With skyfall, it might be a bit of cheap nostalgia but they had the balls to do something different by going "primitive".
the final third and sequence was good enough to redeem the film to me. bardem did a decent job too imo.
and i get that bond films are SUPPOSED to have unrealistic villainy and that's the charm and bardem kind of even achieved that imo.
but this film was dumb as fucking shit. a 5 year old would find spectre dull, bland, boring, cliched and just plain awful in every sense of a film.

Casino Royale was such a good reinvention but they completely fucked up by also trying to appeal to the "we want fun old bond" crowd with Spectre and Skyfall.
They please neither party. They don't work as thrillers you can get invested in because of the dumb cartoon shit they pull and all the winks to the camera but they're also too serious in tone that they apparently don't please the people who want cartoon bond either.
