Will I ever see another animated film this epic? Or should I just give up now?

Akira comes close, it's definitely on par with it's animation and creativity, but it's story is less thematically coherent and the english dub is absolute gutter trash, all 3 versions.

When will something on the level of Princess Mononoke's greatness come out? Saw for the first time two years ago and I don't think it's just my favorite animated feature. I think it's my favorite film, period.

I watched a trailer and can't decide if it looks good. It looks pretty original for sure. I think I'll give it a chance. The dub sounded pretty acceptable too.

Still, I'm not very into steampunk. I love me some high fantasy.

Satoshi Kon in general is a better filmmaker than Miyazaki 2bh, even if I think Princess Mononoke is pretty gud

But cmon, its silly as fuck and the animation is horrendous. Not the art, but the animation. It's like 3 images per frame lol.

Idk if I can trust this list. Evangelion is a truly the most overrated garbage I've seen. My friend who usually has awesome taste kept forcing me to watch it with him and I felt embarassed. All the fan service, all the forced romances, all the plot armor, all the "youre the chosen one" type plot devices that are so generic and weak. Especially the end of that new OVA where he just kind of... uses the power of his love to repair and give his mech a new OP arm? I cringed hard as fuck.

I couldn't find a single redeeming quality to the series other than the monster design. The way mechs work was pretty cool too. That's about it.

Is the rest of that list as cringy? Idk senpai.

>>
>>67890044
You wanted it to be a straight forward adaptation? Books and films are different media, each with their own limits and attributes that don't translate as well. Especially when you have to adapt a four volume saga into a film.
>>

>When will something on the level of Princess Mononoke's greatness come out?

Never, unfortunately.

>>67887587
Steamboy is good as purely an exercise in animation, the film's really pretty and the score's great too, but it is certainly no Princess Mononoke.
>>
>>67887465
There are a few, but most animated films lack decent story telling and the character's reactions are over-exaggerated.
>>
>>67890426
Nothing bad with exaggeration. Kurosawa and Fellini also had over emotional characters in their work. It's called stylization. Animation's strength is in how it's not limited by reality to the same extent live-action.
>>
>>67889413
>new evangelion ova
What now?

Also, Utena is the single greatest thing to come out of Japan, but judging by your odd reasons for hating evangelion (plot armor?) I think you may not "get it", y'know? Like your going to watch it expecting something that it isn't and then get mad when it isn't the thing you expected, refusing to watch the work on its own terms.

Do you need an example? The very like second scene of him moving in with his rooomate (a part of the story that wasnt even necessary) theres a silly sexual tension and scenes of her coming out of the shower to talk to the main character. Why? It's literally so little boys like you can fap and get out some of your sexual frustration. Let me know when something relevant to character development happens. Yawn.

Is the scene from the first rebuild where he magically grows a new arm for his mech not in the original show? Because at that point it was full blown power rangers and it was clear that the writers will come up with anything they need to for when they write themselves into a wall. An absolute shit show of story telling.

There isn't even a consistency to the visual design. What is the practicality of having neon green lights all over their expensive mechs that are protecting their planet from armageddon? They should be built 100% of function, why are they aesthetically absurd? The entire universe of this show is just nonsense. It's masturbation material for 15 year old boys. Enjoy yourself though, by all means. You weirdos need to stop pushing it onto normal human beings with normal human being values and interests.

Nausicaa IS fantastic though. I dont necessarily disagree with anyone who likes it more. I do like how nature isn't portrayed as INHERENTLY good in nausicaa, where in Mononoke it's a little preachy about how amazing nature is. Naussicaa kind of gives you something to chew on.
I don't know though, I think I like the characters a lot more in mononoke.

A classic of camp, good show. "DON'T THINK I WON'T FUCK A DEAD GIRL!"
>>
>>67891936

Is that supposed to be controversial? The Legend of Ashitaka is better than any track from the LOTR score.
>>
>>67891953
>A classic of camp
Eh, I never thought of it that way. I mean it is campy, but it's not really stupid enough to be 'fun' in that way, it's just a fairly standard action movie.
>>
Why is Evangelion so bad though?
>>
>>67891987

We probably have different notions of what camp is. Which is fine.
>>
>>67892025
Because it's a really, genuinely depressing show with a fanbase who actually sees it as something with an ultimately positive life lesson somehow, though they don't bother heeding that themselves.

Ayyo fampai, Princess Mononoke is fantastic stuff but also real entry level.

Wings of Honneamise is where it's at with animated kino. Great animation and designs along with a real interesting story that gets more interesting with subsequent viewings thanks to a Shrek-tier layered protagonist and plot subtleties all over the place. English dub is also incredibly solid.
>>
>>67890290
>4 volume saga

It was only the main plot of the 3rd with charcters from the 4th slapped in for other reason than to force "romance". It was a shit adaptation with no subtlety.

The film adaptation with the freezer guy from Xmen, and Lana lane from smallville was comprehensivly better than this, despite suffering from the same mistakes of merging 2 of the books together.

Its not an easily adaptable source material, but that doesn't excuse poor adaptions
>>
>>67892138

I think The Ninja Scroll's camp because it contains so many attempts to be serious and shocking it just gets impossible to take seriously. The most camp anime I know of is Angel Cop because of how it never *stops* trying to be like that and ends up squeezing something hilariously silly into almost every single scene.
(I'd enjoy 'em a lot less if they didn't, which probably says everything necessary about me.)
>>
>>67892025
Because it's a pootly written pretentious show that decided to use uses controversial imaginery to be notable instead of good writing,
>>
>>67887465

You won't because these are simpler times for simpler people. Every faction in this movie is completely justified in what they are doing and so no one is a bad guy, modern movie goers don't like that. The ending is bittersweet and ambiguous, also something modern watchers don't like. Doubly so on these points for anime fans, since they are naturally the simplest of all people.

Maybe try reading a bit about Anno and the history of Gainax, then watch all of Gainax's major works that precede Eva, then watch it again.

People aren't still talking about eva because 'lolcrosses2deep.' Eva's got all time top-tier waifus, incredibly slick designs and direction and tells a very tight and intricate story which is at the same time a personal one about Anno himself and a statement directed towards his entire audience as a whole.
>>
>>67892505
>Every faction in this movie is completely justified in what they are doing and so no one is a bad guy

That's not true though, the dude who takes the god's head is totally an ass. Even then I felt the movie tried too hard to actively justify everyone else's actions and came off as overly neutral.
>>
>>67892897
Memes aside, it is totally fair to criticize its writing, which honestly is overrated by the fans in general. Eva absolutely lives and dies by the sound and visuals rather than the actual dialog, which really isn't a strength of the show. The characters aren't particularly great either aside from the verisimilitude of their hangups.

>>
>>67893031
It's totally fair to praise it as well. It's got great puzzle-like dozed exposition, lots of visual storytelling. The characters are presented us both through dialogue, but we learn to doubt this through their actions and these aspects may be totally subverted through the scenes with visualized streams of consciousness later in the series.

If you look at just the dialogue it might be lacking, the strength of Eva is in how it utilizes all the aspects of the medium it was conveyed in.

It's similar with its thematic presentation, it's exposed to us through every aspect of the work. The characters, story, setting, visuals and atmosphere itself.
>>
