Bump, thought of both of these Flicks in the past week.

The Crazies was so great. The scene in the babies room creeped me the the fuck out. The one thing I am always surprised about is how little the twist at the end was discussed about. It was completely inconsequential, more so because this movie didn't get a sequel, but it was still interesting.

Lucio Fulci's got kind of a shitty reputation but his zombie movies are absolutely top-tier. He can pull off genuine spooks on top of having some of the goriest effects you'll ever see.

Zombi2 has some great zombie encounter scenes but City of the Living Dead is so much better as horror.

Fulci seems to be the only director aside from George Romero to really get how to make zombies work.

>>
>>67885248

>>
>>67885300
Agreed. I enjoyed the remake, but Romero's film had something that was just lacking in the newer version.

Similarly, I liked Pontypool but the novel it was adapted from (Pontypool Changes Everything) just seemed to have a tension and immersiveness that the film lacked.

For underrated horror, I'd recommend Surveillance. Good cast, good direction from Jennifer Lynch, and some brutal, unsettling scenes make me wonder why more people don't know about this. Even if you figue out the 'twist', the Rashomon style of storytelling should be enough to keep you involved.

I know it's Adam Wingard so some horror snobs might dismiss it out of hand, but I recently saw a movie by him called 'A Horrible Way to Die'. You could definitely do worse if you're looking for tense, unsettling horror that at its best echoes Henry and at its worst is still a damn decent thriller.

Tombs of the Blind Dead is awesome, as are it's sequels. If you're a fan of old school European horror like Lucio Fulci you'll enjoy it. Great atmosphere, fun (if a little low budget) special effects and a surprisingly good plot (the first film has a great ending.)

I'd also like to recommend Burial Ground and Nightmare City for similar reasons.

It was slammed by critics when it was originally published and it flopped badly. It has gained cult following, but it's certainly not a generally liked movie.
>>
>>67890636
>There are many countries in Europe that don't dub because it's retarded and people prefers subs

You're wrong. Even small countries have a thriving dubbing industry. Subbed films are more common there, sure, but people still prefer the dubbed version, just look at sales figures.

Sleepaway Camp, easily.
That movie is actually pretty smart and well directed. One of the best 80s slasher movies out there.
>>
German here:

Movies made after 2000 I watch undubbed (and subbed for languages I don't speak). In the ones made before that, the german dubs are watchable. Sometimes I even prefer it over the original (Ronin for example. DeNiro mumbles alot in that one).

I think back then actual german actors did the dubbing. Nowadays they have 'professional' voice actors for that and you get to hear the same couple of VAs over and over again in various movies.
>>
>>67891917
Professional voice actors ruin everything. English dubs of anime/vidya/whatever were so much more entertaining before the same 5 boring overracting faggots somehow monopolized every single role.

I imagine that having to deal with that for mainstream movie releases would be total shit.

The Devil's Backbone is hardly a horror film. it's a thriller with a ghost in it. it's more of a murder mystery with social commentary than anything horror. still an absolutely brilliant, beautiful, affecting film, with some truly bothersome content, but miles and miles and miles from being categorized as Horror.

It's awfully paced, the action sequences are shitty and for a western movie the locations are extremely boring.

Only good scene is the gore scene, but that is 5 sec worth watching.

For all you people praising stuff like Pontypool, Splinter, Slither, Eden Lake, Triangle, Dead End, Cemetery Man, Noroi, etc, this is one I recommend for you, sure it'll become one of those movies I just mentioned that you'll constantly recommend because it's so criminally unknown and underrated.

I tend to dislike found footage movies because talentless hacks often use them as a platform to make a quick buck. The only ones I liked were Last Broadcast (sans the ending), Grave Encounters (sans the ending), Blair Witch Project, Cannibal Holocaust and As Above, So Below (despite it's flaws).

The Conspiracy (2012) is a found footage mockumentary style, about two dudes trying to uncover the truth behind an Illuminati-like organisation and it's fucking great. The final 30 minutes make up one of the most suspenseful climaxes I've ever seen. The money shot is genuinely unnerving.

dis.

Maybe not underrated as everyone I know thats watched it thinks its great, but not very many people have seen it.
>>
instead of memesulting someone else's opinion, why not accept the fact that you and another human feel differently about a particular movie? can't a discussion thread be about discussion rather than superiority or who is 'right' or 'wrong?' how can an opinion be either? the people who didn't like bone tomahawk clearly composed their thoughts on the matter; isn't that what this is about? jesus.

while I most certainly did enjoy the fuck out of bone tomahawk, I can agree with some of the complaints. mostly the color palette issue stands out for me. but then I think of what life was like when I lived in rural nevada, and it kinda makes sense. granted, there was plenty of room for more open/exposure in the settings...I mean, who doesn't love a good landscape? but saying the movie isn't really Horror? I have to disagree. sure, it's a bit of a hybrid, but from an emotional standpoint, magnified by the brutality and horrific violence (which is appropriately scaled for maximum impact), it is most certainly a horror film.
>>
>>67904231

>instead of memesulting someone else's opinion, why not accept the fact that you and another human feel differently about a particular movie?
The bars mustn't be lowered for the pathetic goal of accepting everybody's opinions
>can't a discussion thread be about discussion rather than superiority or who is 'right' or 'wrong?' how can an opinion be either?
It can as well as not, rarely here. But opinions are right or wrong most of the times, contrary to the contemporary mantra would want people to believe.
>>
>>67904845
there are many opinions that may be either right or wrong, but that's very different from subjective opinions on art/entertainment. one's enjoyment level, and the way in which one considers whether or not a film is 'good' or 'bad,' is entirely up to the viewer. we are simply here to say why. too bad for you that you didn't reply in regards to the topic at hand, and instead continued an aspect of the discussion itself that has already been shown to be fruitless, and non-contributional to the topic at hand.

that being said, what's YOUR underrated horror film? or how do YOU like or dislike some of the examples given?

Agreed.

I thought it had some good dialogue, and good western feel.

But the story is dumb, drags on, and the movie ends in a dull non thrilling fashion.

It was great until they showed the monsters / spirits during the final 10 minutes. Turned into CGI pleb shit. The sequel was bretty enjoyable too. You can debate whether or not it's actually any good but it was sure as fuck entertaining. I didn't mind the shitty CGI monsters in the sequel because the sequel had it's goofy campy tone set from the beginning. The original was able to build up a genuine sense of helplessness, atmosphere and dread only to piss it all away with the shitty monster reveal.

>>67909826

>>
>>67910466
you're missing the subtext. it's about horror scream queens being martyrs for our entertainment. Martyrs then redeems their pain and suffering by elevating their cause to that of art, in turn elevating the film itself by giving it a higher purpose (the recognition of their martyrdom).

It's a cool concept but everything else is still shit tbqh

>There seems to be a fascination for suffering in the film, whether physical or psychological, whether with those who inflict it or those who are subjected to it.

>It’s not really a fascination, but a questioning. The film is a personal reaction to the darkness of our world. And I like the paradox within horror film: take the worst of the human condition and transform it into art, into beauty. It’s the only genre that offers this kind of dialectic and I have always found this idea very moving – to create emotion with the saddest, most depressing things in existence. I’ve always felt that horror was a melancholy genre.

Mrs. French's cat is missing. The signs are posted all over town. "Have you seen Honey?" We've all seen the posters, but nobody has seen Honey the cat. Nobody. Until last Thursday morning, when Miss Colette Piscine swerved her car to miss Honey the cat as she drove across a bridge. Well this bridge, now slightly damaged, is a bit of a local treasure and even has its own fancy name; Pont de Flaque. Now Collette, that sounds like Culotte. That's Panty in French. And Piscine means Pool. Panty pool. Flaque also means pool in French, so Colete Piscine, in French Panty Pool, drives over the Pont de Flaque, the Pont de Pool if you will, to avoid hitting Mrs. French's cat that has been missing in Pontypool. Pontypool. Pontypool. Panty pool. Pont de Flaque. What does it mean? Well, Norman Mailer, he had an interesting theory that he used to explain the strange coincidences in the aftermath of the JFK assasination. In the wake of huge events, after them and before them, physical details they spasm for a moment; they sort of unlock and when they come back into focus they suddenly coincide in a weird way. Street names and birthdates and middle names, all kind of superfluous things appear related to eachother. It's a ripple effect. So, what does it mean? Well... it means something's going to happen. Something big. But then, something's always about to happen.
