This is my thinking as well but with DC running things I fully expect the movie to take place 90% on land and look bland as fuck.
Even if it did take place underwater a couple of things have me worried.
1. Aquaman can talk underwater but I have no idea how this is going to be presented in a movie that won't be goofy as fuck. The idea of Mamoa having a long monologue with a warbly underwater filter over makes me cringe.
2. Action scenes underwater are generally boring because everyone moves so slowly. See the action scenes in Thunderball that are sped up because of this and look like complete shit. I guess they can have some action scenes in an underwater city or something but that seems like a waste of the concept.
3. Aquaman can breath underwater but obviously Mamoa can't so they'll have to film at least the close ups greenscreen on a set and make it look like he's underwater which could look really cheesy if they skimp on the budget.
Even if they can solve all 3 of those things they'll still have to think up an interesting story.
I like Mamoa though so I'm rooting for it to succeed.

It's not about brand loyalty to DC or Marvel, it's about fanboy faggotry. Fanboys LOVED the Nolan movies. When the early reviews for Dark Knight Rises said it didn't live up to Dark Knight, critics literally received death threats. It was major news that ended up getting more or less drowned out after the Aurora shootings, but it was news none the less. Compare that to BvS and the DCEU in general, which has been reviled by most fans every step of the way. Fanboys don't like Snyder. Fanboys hated when they announced Affleck. Fanboys hate the new Joker. Fanboys hate almost everything about it.
And I'm not saying that BvS is being treated unfairly, the movie fucking sucked. But I am saying their Marvel reviews tend to be pretty soft ball compared to their reviews of normal movies.

I think most of the talky bits will probably take place in and around Atlantis, which if I'm not mistaken kind of looks like a sealab 2021 meets Game of Thrones affair.

Again, most of it will be movie magic, but boy howdy did that scene in BvS with Mamoa underwater look stupid. You could tell he was holding his breath, and obviously he was, but they
held on that shoot for 10 seconds too long. It was fucking ridiculous.
