A story about Superman's life growing up would have been infinitely more interesting as a film than "son, you were meant to be special, but not now, don't save me, become a hobo that wanders the earth". You could even go more serious with it and still make it into a compelling story. Maybe not blow your wad by putting fucking Zod in your first fucking film.

because it was grounded and down to earth.
It showed and emphasized superman's greatest trait: being human. Clark and Lex's bromance also helped a lot while also having one of the hottest female casts in a CW show. Granted MoS and BvS didn't have enough time to show Clark's human side besides his civilian life which they absolutely squandered.
