from what I've seen online people hate it. Of all things to leave on a cliffhanger this isn't one of them. Its supposed to be a huge build up to one of the most shocking deaths that has ever been on this show, instead it was a buildup to nothing. All of that tension and fear the episode did a good job of creating will go away in the 7 months it takes for the show to come back. The death won't have as big of an impact which fucking sucks because it was a huge thing when that comic came out. This would have been one of the best episodes of the if it ended with whoever in a bloody pulp with people screaming and Negan smiling or something. It built suspense by the Saviors blocking their every path demonstrating their scope and power. It teased the Kingdom. It introduced THE villain. I liked those parts of the episode, though. In the comic book, it was excusable to just have them show up on the road one day and blindisde them, but the decision to turn the ordeal into a full episode that rebuilds the saviors damaged reputation in the way of spooks was pretty good. the morgan and carol b plot was decent enough, though i find it difficult to care about those characters until the kingdom came along.

I see where you're coming from, but saying they've been shown as incompetent morons is a bit far, I think. The decision to have their literal first appearance be met with them all being comically blown up, and reducing Dwights most prominent appearance to dickbiting was inexcusable, but I thought the other scenes conveyed a threatening vibe well enough. Even when they were being slaughtered in their sleep, they still came across as heartless and cruel because of the bat victims collage.
All in all, I think its important to understand that the Saviors aren't interested in slaughtering communities they want to put to work, but I understand the thematic dissonance that occurs when they're suddenly showing their competent, well-numbered and organized side.
It's also important to know that I'm a raging comicfag and will pretty much excuse anything except for that fucking cliffhanger.

So Neegan's whole plan depended on Rick and co. being idiots? He said they spent a lot of time/resources setting up this one day. How did they know they'd be leaving on this particular day to go North? Were they just sitting there every day or waiting and waiting for a car to finally go North?
They should have turned around and went back to Alexandria after the first group , and if not then after the second one. Especially knowing that the Saviors knew he killed their men and were out and about.
How could they have gotten the RV to the exact spot where they were going to walk without being really obvious and Rick seeing/hearing it? They could have ventured into the woods at any point and taken many routes, but they just happen to wander into that carefully orchestrated scene?
Why would Rick even try to keep going to Hilltop? I get Maggie is sick, but they obviously knew where they were going and would have just gone to get them if they'd made it past one of the roadblocks. Alexandria was obviously the safest place for the group at that point.
It would have made way more sense to just be waiting for them at the Hilltop and closed the gate behind them to prevent them from leaving.

Even then they weren't going through the woods with a compass, so I highly doubt they were going in a straight line having to go around trees and brush so they don't fall. Not to mention it was night, so it would be even harder to keep going in a straight line. The best they could do is go in a general direction but likely would have been all over the place.
