Only moderately watchable until the end of season 2, everything after that is just crapshot.
Season 2 gets a lot of help from binge-watching, the slow nature actually helps the Shane dynamic story. People complaining about Season 2 lived through it, but its much better when you can do it just go through it. Prison-time? Nowhere near as much. Show Governor actually pretty fine villain (And the now forgotten lackeys were expertly done, show never had such good minor support as Martinez and Shumpert), but just every overarching element is shit.
Nowadays its just talking and talking and the heroes win except when they literally can't win because of comics.

Imagine if they had just killed off all of the disposable characters they could.
Instead of leaving us high and dry with a cliff-hanger, they take out as many people as they can.
Every character not in the comics gets Lucille, every character that has already died in the comics gets Lucille.
Imagine the shock that would come with multiple mains getting knocked out in one episode. Nobody, not comic readers or TV watchers, would be prepared to see 3-5 named characters get killed off at once.
If they had cut out 10 of the useless minutes from the driving sequence, and spent the last ten murdering the cast after those fifteen minutes of explicit build-up, this episode would have lived up to the hype.
