I finally watch TFA and I un-ironically enjoyed Adam Driver's portrayal of Kylo Ren.
He was not a very good villain, and that is because he really isn't a villain at all. He is just some confused teenage emo fuckwad who is overwhelmed by a power that he probably never wanted, but that he was encouraged to grow by everybody around him since he was young.
It is implied that he is the one who fucked up Luke's academy, and he seems genuinely guilty and angry over all of his actions and mistakes, but that he just can't stop.
He is being consumed by the dark side, and I think that this is what that process would look like for a young adult with serious emotional issues. He is grasping to a role model without knowing the truth about Anakin rejecting the dark side at the end, but I believe that the 'cycle' of the series will result in him attempting redemption also.
TFA was pretty dumb overall, but Kylo being used as a tool by some sith lord wasn't one of those things. I thought it made a suitable arc to be explored in future movies.
