The movie has two plots...the first is to find Luke, which they could have done in Act 3 of 5 if they wanted it to be like A New Hope.
The other plot is to destroy the new Death Star, but oddly enough... Poe destroys the Death Star and then Rey finds Luke, telling essentially the same story as the first movie, but opting to tell it in a different order.
Luke could have met up with Han in the middle of the movie, had a brief reunion before he died, and so forth.
So they at least took a slightly different route in reteling the story.
All the stuff with the Falcon was great. I fucking loved the reveal.

It just felt over the top, like it didn't take itself seriously. The original Star Wars was pretty ridiculous, but it at least tried to sell you the setting and draw you in. You had an idea of the power dynamic in the galaxy with Empire vs Rebels. Now you've got Resistance, Republic and "First Order"? It's not even explained beyond that. If the Rebels won in 6, why is the Resistance still needed? What are they resisting against if they hold the power?
Then there's the pottery of the entire first fucking film from the desert planet, to the mentor, to the fucking bar scene and the death star. I get that JJ is trying to sell Star Wars to "the new generation" or whatever the fuck by making all of the actors look like teenagers, but honestly it's just fucking jarring. There's no reason Hux had to be a little bitchbaby if you're trying to potterize the Admiral from 4. And try not to talk down to me with the Nazi imagery, JJ. I get it, the First Order are the Bad Guys™, you don't need the Stormtroopers doing a fucking fascist salute. The holocaust and World War 2 was 70 fucking years ago, get over it you stupid kike.
Kylo Ren isn't threatening because of his face alone and him taking off his mask was a fucking mistake. At least there was still a mystery surrounding his character, but now we know all about how his story's going to play out. Bad guy who becomes badder in the second film and then in the third becomes a good guy because of muh light side, and he throws Snoke down a hole.
JJ was WAY too safe with the material he had and instead of trying to tell an interesting story he just rehashed the 4th out of fear of failure, and yet ended up making a shitty version of A New Hope. All of the practical effects and pretty CGI in the world can't carry a stale script.

I actually didn't think it was that bad, maybe because my expectations were so low from the prequels and SJW kikery.
First the good:
New, mexican Han Solo was actually pretty funny and endearing, really wish he would've been in the movie more. Old Han Solo was also surprisingly good, not nearly as much geriatric cringe as I was expecting. Some legitimately good lines from him. Also glad that they made him and leia's relationship fall apart, that definitely would've happened.
The first order shit had a cool aesthetic, nice upgrade from the OT. The new villain darth emo was pretty good too. I really like how he was so insecure and full of rage. He's basically what Anakin should've been. I also like how he went full evil by merc'ing his dad at the end. And I know this opinion will be unpopular, but his voice was pretty rad imo.
The Bad:
1st and foremost, Daisy and Token Black were really boring, flat and emotionless characters. I felt like I knew nothing about them even at the end of the movie. None of their motivations are explained.They are just sort of there. Not sure if this is a fault of the acting, the writing or both. There was just nothing there.
Really wish we got more time seeing Finn working with the empire. His defection seems cheap when it's so undeveloped.
Another problem with the movie is the recycled plot. Another deathstar? It's the exact same shit, for the third time. It was already stale when they did it the second time, the third iteration was just a slap in the face. I will give them props for the mass genocide they did with it before it was destroyed. Though again that was stolen from the OT.
My biggest problem by far was the complete lack of clarity as to the overall military/political situation. Seriously wtf? Did the Rebels win? Is the Empire back or did it never leave and ROTJ was just a temporary setback? Who controls the galaxy? Are the rebs just a scattered force of guerrillas like in the OT, or an actual state?.

I really don't get Finn as a character. If he and all the other stormtroopers were raised in the First Order from birth, why was he the only one who defected? What makes him different? Was he always a wisecracking goofball who didn't fit in with the others, or did he just magically learn to be human from a few hours of exposure to Poe and Rey?
imo it would have worked better if we saw that the stormtroopers are also victims of Imperial fascism and only fall in line because they're threatened with beatings and shit if they disobey. All of them would kill for a chance to escape and Finn was just the one lucky enough to meet Poe and run away with him. Then there could be some good internal conflict when he has to kill his former brothers in arms. Plus the relationship between him and Rey would be more believable cause we could see them helping each other overcome their traumatic pasts.
Also what was with the droids. Why are they suddenly treated as sentient beings with rights and shit? In all the other movies they're just clever robots with cute personalities programmed in that nobody really takes seriously. How does that make any sense if the Rebels won the war and restored the republic? Shouldn't Luke and Co. be heroes that are famous across the galaxy?
