I mean I can appreciate El Topo, but Holy Mountain - the first time I saw that I thought HOLY SHIT how is it that this movie really exists and is not one of the most famous movies ever made? There is nothing like it. It seems like it was beamed in from another planet. I want to see that shit sitting on the shelves at Best Buy. The day that happens the whole world will probaly melt or something.
I really wish he would make Sons of El Topo because years ago I was able to read the script and it was fucking GREAT. It was translated from french to English, and you would think that a Jodorowsky movie wouldn't work on paper anyway, but it was actually very suspenseful and exciting. I'm sure the script has evolved since then but at the time it was about El Topo's two sons, Cain and Abel, carrying the sainted body of their dead mother to bury on an island with their father, while every bandit in the land follows the perfume scent of her flesh trying to steal it to use to get onto the island and steal El Topo's treasure. Also I believe volcanoes were involved.

if we're to take jodorowsky at his word, in his autobiography he says he didn't do drugs before holy mountain and had declared to the media that he didn't need drugs because his own movies were the psychedelic experiences he wanted. but decided to give them a try after casting himself as the guru, since he felt he didn't have the mind-altering experiences he imagined enlightened masters would have
then along came the guy who played axxon, who pestered jodorowsky for a job and jodorowsky figured he could play axxon with that attitude he had. turns out the guy was connected to some sort of cult in the USA with a guru named ichazo. he put jodorowsky in touch and ichazo went to mexico and gave jodorowsky his first dose of LSD. then he was supposed to train him for two weeks, but ichazo bailed out with the money he'd been paid. he left behind two assistants who "trained" jodorowsky and the cast of the movie into all sort of shamanic and eastern stuff.
it came to the point they were all convinced they were on the path to enlightenment, which is why they did some crazy shit for real in the movie (like eating psychedelic mushrooms when they arrive at the island). then they nearly drowned filming a scene and that made them snap out of it and acknowledge they were only making a movie. that's why the movie ends like it does, revealing it's all a track and saying "we're going back to reality". (the original script had a different ending but that fell through, so they decided on this new one as a replacement)

I definitely admire his passion and absurdity but he is not as deep as he supposed himself to be. Jodorowsky's Dune was definitely a wank fest and I highly doubt Dali was jealous of Jodo ever in his life. I still would have loved to see his version of Dune, it would have either been a terrific art house/psychedelic epic like Holy Mountain or a totally beautiful mess.

His films have rich imagery drawn from Tarot, Biblical, Freudian, Eastern mystical sources with a psychedelic, neo-shamanist interpretation. Beneath all the surreal elements they all have simple stories about self-discovery and spiritual catharsis.

the latter probably. I honestly think Jodo just wasn't competent enough for the project. And I don't buy half the shit he said, like the Orson Welles thing. Was nice of the director to post here though, felt like a pretty one of a kind moment

IIRC right after it leaked, Frank noticed someone on letterboxd had written a review and contacted the user asking where he'd seen it (since it hadn't been released theatrically at that point). The letterpleb told him that someone on /tv/ had uploaded the movie to mega and Frank wanted the file off mega. He came here to ask us not to share it and it took about two threads for him to figure out how to post and how to work a tripcode.

Many frontal shots, the director doesn't shy away from nudity.
i think he's mostly misunderstood. he's mostly making "comic book" type movies (capekino), and his main instrument is actually his humor. the second is the conviction in his own vision.
visually though I find anything in other "comic book" movies to be equally as interesting, conan the barbarian is basically analogous to holy mountain but with more convincing special effects and bigger budget.
