It's a light slashing sword that, for no reason, requires two hands and is made with the worst metal on the planet. A one-handed grip gives you more reach and leaves the other hand free for a shield/pistol/parrying dagger/disarming/grappling etc as well as allowing you to stand sideways and make yourself a smaller target, but a two-handed light weapon forces you to show the widest part of your body and gives you less reach; not to mention it leaves your arms vulnerable every time you strike. Whereas most two-handed weapons like longswords/halberds/battle axes etc. actually make use of the extra strength and give the user armor penetration and weight, the katana doesn't serve this purpose and is actually shit for armor penetration.
The sword just doesn't make any sense at all, it only worked in the isolated environment of Japan where it's only competition was equally illogical swords.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.

The gladius serves it's purpose well as a stabbing sword to be used with a large shield in formation. It served the romans well because it allowed them to be in tight formations and maneuver their weapon easily without being hindered by or hindering those next to them. It's light enough to be used in one hand, does incredible amounts of internal damage due to the wide center of the blade, and is perfect for thrusting through weak points in a defense.
Basically, it's perfect for what it was meant to do, unlike the katana, which was meant to be a slashing weapon and is outperformed by several swords for that purpose.

Yes there are small/big katanas (wakizashi/odachi) but the basic style is still the same, and they're even more tablet-tier compared to the competition they face in their respective weight-tiers.
