I remember being so hyper for Avatar. I'd seen leaked concept art of the Navi and had such faith in Jim to deliver on this passion project of his.
I thought by "passion project" it meant passion for the story, but no, apparently it was just his passion for making cool special effects.
I have no idea what about the first or this one what needs so much thinking out and planning. White corporate america and the military industrial complex is bad. Got it.
>>
Are those avatar fansites still up? I remember reading stories about people killing themselves in the hopes of being reborn as a navi or whatever they were called.

If Abbie comes back I'll cry. Same if he doesn't, I just really miss that era of /tv/

They left it way to fucking long.

It did well because of the new tech and the huge amounts of hype, that's not happening this time and it'll get lost in sea of other huge blockbusters.

Pre-production? Isn't this supposed to open next year?

It only grossed a lot because its 3D was a novelty. I can't recall ONE person not mentioning the 3D when talking about going to see the movie.

It might do really well if it comes out in a few years after infinity war and capeshit is dieing. It will basically be competing with something capeshit no matter when it comes out for the next few years and normies are still on the cape train at the moment.

Absolutely retarded.

Obviously this beats every non-JC movie by default, but I don't think it'll beat the original Avatar. My guess is that it nestles between that and Titanic at around $2.3-2.4b.

Avatar is such a weird anomaly. It’s the highest grossing film EVER (not adjusting for inflation) by a huge margin and yet it left virtually no footprint on popular culture. It had its 15 minutes of fame to the tune of $2.7 billion dollars worldwide, and within a few years it’s like no one remembers it even existed. You only ever really see it mentioned these days in the context of its record-breaking box office.
>>
>>67795868
That tweet would be less annoying if she wasn't comparing Avatar to an established franchise
>>
>>67795868
THIS. I guess like another anon said, no movie did what Avatar did back in 2009 otherwise since then way better blockbusters have been made.

There is no point in making a sequel to this because no one will be interested, unless they made the sequel in 2012 then maybe we would.
>>
>>67795868

I've seen that boring ass movie twice and its true. Looked nice in theaters, but the plot is completely bland and dull. Can't remember a single line either
>>

Yeah I regret buying it on blu ray the other month cos was bored and thought it would be a new experience watching it again ever since I saw it in theatres
>>
>>67790798
Considering there has never been 1 single /tv/ thread about Avatar in last 5 years proves how uninterested we all are in seeing a sequel.

It is gonna suck big time because Sam Worthington wont even be in it but only his voice due to him dying and being resurrected in an Avatar
>>
Who the fuck cares about a sequel after nearly 10 years?
>>
It's going to sell at least $200 million because it has James Cameron's name alone but not much outside of that

It's going to flop bad because people forgot all about it outside of holding box office records and it won't even be able to use the 3D gimmick

I'm genuinely excited. He knows a simple, everyday sequel won't live up to its predecessor. The blowout was because of the new feature of 3D in another world. So this time he's going to make something different.

I'm guessing VR

So this will probably come out about 10 years after the first movie. I imagine it'll turn a profit, but what is it riding on culturally? The wait means absolutely no momentum, but it's not a story people really connected to and that they'll look back on fondly and if you're doing a ten years later sequel you need to have some nostalgia. Are people nostalgic for Avatar? Christ how has it been seven years since 09?

The fact that the first film is the highest grossing film of all time ever.

If you've never seen it in the theater then you will never understand it. It was a 3D experience unlike anything before. Friends and I went twice seeing it. Story? Forgettable. But its world looked spacey and just crazily immersive.

So yeah the 3D effects absolutely killed it.

About one of the Avatar aliens wanting to go to the humans home land to kill all humans but Worthington lead tries to talk him out of it.

This doesnt work and this Avatar gets more on his side as they steal human spaceships and travel to earth while Worthington gets other Avatars on his side to as well go to earth to try and stop this group from raging havoc.

Now we get a Man of Steel battle on earth until in the end Worthington's love interest dies as he saves the day by killing the evil Avatar character.

You are wrong. Cameron has a hobby of travelling below the surface and he purposely makes movies to get the equipment to do this hobby.

That was the whole reason why Titanic was made cos he is a sucker for seeing underwater stuff.

But true we might see some underwater things in the sequel and be introduced to a new breed of animals on Pandora.

Hope it doesnt turn into Finding Nemo.

Cameron is a fucking hack now. He doesnt have the balls to make R rated films and instear has to stick to crappy PG shit.

If he made Avatar 2 R rated with sex scenes: then it may be a hit at the box office because lots of people wanted to see how they made love - as well as if it was R rated, then we could explore some more visciousness of different sub Avatar groups possibly hating each other and slaughtering as the story changes instead of keeping them all peaceful.

This movie better have Worthington in it and not just his voice or I am fucking skipping this and waiting for a crappy cam rip
>>
>>67798436
>most hyped movie
No it wasn't.

I remember when it was released. The popular internet reaction was "I wish this was a Last Airbender movie" until it came out (and then, later, we got a Last Airbender movie).

There was pretty much no hype until it released, and then it pretty much got big due to word of mouth, everyone telling everyone else they had to go see it in theaters. It's why it's opening weekend wasn't huge and yet it stayed in theaters forever and made a ton of money.
>>
>>67798534
Yeah i am not really that interested anymore.

But then again he does have a habit of taking AGES to do sequels and besides terminator 2 none of his other movies have ever got one.

total false memory syndrome

it didn't have close to the biggest opening box office. it succeeded primarily on a great trailer filled with eye candy, and pure word of mouth + repeat business.

this board is filled with complete retards who are simply underestimating Cameron.

one thing though: he's doing 3 more movies, so he has something big planned, and he'll put it in the first trailers to ensure the movies are just dismissed. so until we see actual footage we can't assume anything.

if it works as well as the original did as a story, it is guaranteed to outgross the individual Marvel movies. the huge international audience for Avatar didn't just decide they hated it en masse.
>>
>>67798877
Avatar was cool because it had a new gimmick. That was literally what drew people into the theaters and got them to watch it over and over.

Nowadays, 3D just isn't novel or new. There's been tons of 3D movies, most of them shitty. I dunno, if he comes up with a new gimmick as good as 3D was for Avatar 2, maybe it'll be big.

>>
>>67798951
>Avatar was cool because it had a new gimmick.

just because you repeat it endlessly doesn't make it true. the low initial gross means the gimmick BY ITSELF wasn't that much of an initial draw.

the story and the gimmick both complemented each other, it was about the execution of the 3D as much as the simple fact of the 3D. almost everyone agrees that Avatar has the best usage of 3D to date, and that's not gimmicky, it's because Cameron finetuned it in different scenes just like any other element of cinematography.
>>
>>67799299
That's not what I'm saying.

When people heard about the gimmick, they initially dismissed it. They laughed about those goofy red and blue glasses. Then they went as saw the gimmick and were actually impressed by it, and word-of-mouth about how amazing the 3D was brought more people in.

In other words, it was cool because it had a new gimmick.

They really should re-release Avatar in theaters. The theatrical experience was amazing. I think the only modern film that matches it is maybe Gravity in 3D.
>>
>>67799481
Thanks for the recommendation!
>>
>>67799487
oh yeah absolutely

I'm sick of people saying its just a gimmick too. It's genuinely artistic the way those films utilize the third dimension and make it just as important, and beautiful, as the standard 2d images presented to us
>>
>>67799351
you are 100% relying on the word "gimmick".

3D is a technology that can be used to enhance a story just like any other aspect of cinematography. it's just that unlike Technicolor you have to actually do it well for it to pay off for the audience.

Gravity pulled off the same thing as Avatar did and made bank via word-of-mouth for the 3D visuals even though the tech wasn't new any more. the issue is that there have been so few films that actually used 3D effectively.
>>
>>67799523
The 3D was a gimmick, but it wasn't "just a gimmick." It really did add something significant to the movie. Watching it on TV just isn't the same, and I can understand why you wouldn't like Avatar if you never actually saw it in 3D in theaters (or you did, but you're the type of person who 3D doesn't work on).
>>
>>67799580
>you are 100% relying on the word "gimmick".
But I'm not. You're reading into it and creating arguments for me based on your misinterpretations that I have no actual intention of making. Stop it.
>>
>>67799643
yeah, I'm creating an argument for you because you're not making one.

>it was cool because it had a new gimmick.

this is provably wrong. there were a lot of reasons it was cool, the usage of 3D enhanced all of the other things about it that worked.

the concept that 3D got it to 2.7 billion is incorrect because even with inflated ticket prices it still sold more actual tickets than any film since Gone With The Wind.
>>
>>67799777
>yeah, I'm creating an argument for you because you're not making one.
Okay. Can you stop that strawman bullshit? I'm not interested and here's your last (You).

I really think Cameron misjudged this multiple sequel project. WB persuaded him to make three sequels simultaneously, and the result is it'll eat up at least 10 years of his career.

The chinks will love it again. Plus he's bound to use some sort of meme cinema technique like 60fps or virtual reality.

I actually thought Avatar was a decent movie, solid 7/10. It's not a bad movie by any means, just had a ridiculous amount of success.
>>
>>67797470

The dollar was fucking worthless back then so the foreign gross got inflated, I remember because at the time the £1 was worth $2 whereas now £1 is worth $1.4 so for instance the British gross in dollars was higher than normal.

Memes and jokes aside, i think that as a movie it will be better than the first one, Cameron knows how to make a good sequel (Aliens and Terminator 2 are among the best, if not THE best sequels ever made) and Avatar was insignificant, story-wise. Basically a trivia point/technicality. Titanic's original theatrical run is by far the most successful box office run of all time, selling vastly more tickets than even Avatar, and more than any film since box office records began. Give it a rerelease or two more in theatres (which is more than fair; Gone with the Wind had 9+) and it'll surpass Gone with the Wind's lifetime gross.

A bunch of movies were 3D before Avatar. Why didn't they make 3 billion?
>>
Anyone remember that guy that spammed /TV/ with daily Avatar threads. Whatever happened to him.

The key to the success of Avatar was not only the 3D novelty, but it also appealed to a weird cultural black hole that doesn't have a big presence on the internet. Im talking like computer illiterate, slightly older women that own ferrets, or are into weird new age shit, wear those ugly animal shirts unironically, people along those lines.
