1. The plebs who go around pretending to watch films simply to impress their peers would not care much for a film like 2001. They'd instead go around pretending to watch something like Satantango. 2001 is simply not hip enough for their kind.
2. 2001 is a pretty straightforward film, in other words, the themes and motifs are not exactly subtle. You'd really have to be a complete idiot to go around pretending to think 2001 was a good film with the sole intent of appearing cool or interesting. Most people who praise 2001, do so because of its merits and understand perfectly well why it is a good film.
If anything this just states that you didn't "get" 2001, and feel insecure about not "getting" it. Instead of rewatching the film to gain more insight, you simply scoff it off as a "movie that people pretend" is good. just so that you can feel better about the fact that you're legitimately a moron.
