The film industry is quite perverse.
>>
>>67714784
The thing that WB needs to consider is the Avengers factor.

BVS, like Avengers, was going to be a huge hit no matter what happened. That was obvious, because people have wanted them for so long. However, despite /co/ slamming it all the time, Avengers was a good romp that brought the entertainment and satisfaction people wanted. It had a good reputation, so it did nothing but skyrocket and make people mindlessly anticipate its successors. BVS is a hit, but it could have made so much more money if it wasn't being considered such a disappointment.

It made money, yes, but by this point it should've made Star Wars money.
>>
>>67714974

does anyone know what the REAL budget is? that 400 million gotta be BS
>>
>>67715179

reported as $250 million
>>
>>67715179
$250 million production budget, but that doesn't include marketing, which probably doubles it. Which is why you're hearing that the film needs to make $800 million just to break even.
>>
>>67714784
Daily reminder that Zack is actively trying to get his cut of the film out in theaters, if it does shit in week two, WB will probably do it

They spend tens of millions on marketing for one and 2) exhibitors get their cut from the ticket sales as well as distributors. So just because it sold that much in ticket sales doesn't mean it's all going back to the studio.

Yeah, Hollywood accountants frequently lie and fudge numbers, but realistically films still need to make like ([the budget]+20 mill)x2.
>>
When will you fuckers realize all that matters is what the studio EXPECTED to make.
>>
>>67714974
>500 million

Compare it to ultron. If you compare each market individually BvS got less in almost every single one, both foreign and domestic.
That monday record? Already disproven.

BvS is a hit but not gonna reach even AoU

800m is too high to break even. the 150m on marketing sounds about right...even if thats a lie it wouldnt be over 250m. once it break 500m its all good.
>>
>>67714784
It's not even going to hit a billion. It'll probably peak around $850 million worldwide. The damage control is so real WB is reshooting Suicide Watch as we speak.
>>
>>67715322
Jesus Christ Movie DLC is a thing now fuck you WB.
>>
It is. It's still making a profit but I'm hoping that by now the studio can see that Snyder is the issue.

It'll be lucky to scrape what Iron Man 3 made. And Iron Man 3 was a fucking one man show.
>>
>>67715291
I can't believe how much money they blow away on fucking movies like this. And it's considered a flop if it doesn't at least cross the 1 billion mark.

Where does 250+ go? How can you make district 9 look better than 99.9% of movies for a 20 million budget but need 250+marketing for this?

>>

Why do you think they would break even if the film made the exact money it cost? Not all the money goes back to the studio, dude. Other people are getting paid. It needs to double that shit for the studio to break even.
>>
>>67715647
>>67715494
blame the studio forcing cuts to a 6th of a film 5 months before release
>>
>>67715706
Can you cite example of a films marketing costing more than 250m?
>>
>>67715739
Watch district 9 again. It does not look good
>>
>>67715739
Pretty sure Weta worked mostly for free on D9, which was just a bone Jackson threw Blomkamp when Halo didn't pan out.
>>
>>67715858
Better than the Doomsday CGI, that's for sure.
>>
>>67715826
While I'd much prefer seeing the 3 hour R rated cut in theaters, I can't blame the studio for the cuts because they're a business and need to make back on their investment. A shorter movie with a more inclusive rating is simply more likely to make money. It's taking a dump on creativity but that's the nature of the beast.

However special screenings for the extended version would have been an excellent idea and I wish they'd done that.

at least better than bvs.
but better example would be ex machina. 15MM budget, visual effects oscar, BANG
>>
>>67715692
probably 1.5+ billion.

iirc Disney Marvel considered AoU a flop because it didn't meet their expectations. the movie made 1.5 billion.
>>
>>67715729
They claimed it had the highest grossing monday (hurr beats AoU) but it's not even close. 30th place.

Then if they claim "b-but only march" which is the opposite of their initial claim remind then there are no marvel movies released in march.

why times two ?

profit start as soon as you get your money back
>>
>>67716155
Ultron made 1.4 and sits on the list of highest grossing movies at #6 but it didn’t make enough money, and it didn’t earn enough praise. Jesus christ.
>>
>>67716155
Thats batshit crazy (no pun intended) expecting to make that much. Expecting to release the highest grossing film of all time every summer is bad for business.
>>
>>67716213

Because box office isn't money back. Intermediaries take from the box office. Exhibitors take different amounts of the ticket price, but the standard amount (also depends on how long the film has been out) is 50% for the purposes of calculating.

Box office needs to be twice for the studio to get the budget back.
>>
>>67716213
>profit start as soon as you get your money back
technicaly yes, but they want to make money, so 'slightly above even' is not considered real profit
>>
>>67715936
>special screenings for the extended version would have been an excellent idea
I agree. If the R version is clearly better, then release it for older people and critics and then release a pg 13 version, much shorter than what BvS currently is and make it more action packed and focus almost entirely on batman, like cut out almost all Superman scenes and half of Lex scenes. They would have sold toys and sold more tickets, but they fucked up by having Snyder cut his film last second, that was my point. Snyder can make good movies but if the studio forces cuts, especially late ones, it ruins his films
>>
>>67715568
Studio gets 50% from American ticket sales, less from the World and only 25% from China.
(Of course there is always some Jew money magic involved, ie marketing is done by other companies owned by WB)
>>
>>67716527

Yeah, exactly. It's something like 40% overseas, but in reality it's much lower because of other expenses.

I know it's often pretty dishonest (making out films that pulled in almost a billion dollars to have lost money to rip people off on the back-end), but I'm surprised how many people on /tv/ seem to think that every dollar of box office is going directly back to studios.

You can see in what exhibitors file with the SEC how much money is actually going back to studios. About 50%.
>>
>>67716736
Yeah, and you can see this in a movie like Pacific Rim which made back over double its budget, but was considered a box office dissapointment. Partly because it did much better overseas than in the US.

Not that impressive considering almost no blockbuster opens up in the entire world at the same time.
Compare domestic box office, it has made about 8 million less than Iron Man 3.

I still wonder what went wrong. DC has consistently stronger and more famous characters. But marvel can even earn money with B Characters, while DC stumbles with Batman and Superman.
>>
>>67720136
Famous characters are held to a standard due to nostalgia. My theory is in 10 yrs folks will like these films, once the bubble pops.
>>
>>67714974

Jesus fuck, I'm getting tired of this shit.

You are on fucking /tv/. How is it possible that you still don't know how box office works?

Studio gets only HALF of box office. And BvS cost them 450 million $.
>>
>>67720428
>Studio gets only HALF of box office

Why do people believe this? Maybe in foreign markets where they have to pay licensing fees and shit to the Communist Party, but in the US and Europe studios get most of the box office gross.

which is why TFA grossing nearly a billion in America alone was such a grand slam for Disney and foreign isn't as important as some people beleive
>>
>>67714784
Nah this is one of those movies everyones gonna see in the theatre its just not so big everyones gonna see it first week. I haven't even seen it yet but then again I was going to the Thursday sneak peak showing but shit happened.
>>
>>67720524

They get around 60% in USA, half in EU and less in other parts of the world. From China it's like 1/3.
>>
>>67720618
Where does the other 40% go? It sure as hell doesn't go to theaters, they make all their money in advertising and the 1500% markup on popcorn.
