The witcher is not generic fantasy. It shares a lot of similarities with game of thrones in that it's author purposefully fucks with expectations based around the fantasy genre, but it's less grim-dark then GoT.
People have described it like a fantasy Noir and while that is kind of pretentious, Geralt has more similarities with Phillip Marlowe than usual fantasy characters.
