It extremely well when pulled off correctly and is a recipe for a great, complex character, but is definitely not necessary.
In my opinion that's usually done to make the character have some depth past katana wielding edgelord murderer as well as being sympathizable to the audience.
But Malvo is likeable because billy bob thortdiddly played him so damn charismatic, and he has some depth in how he likes to corrupt innocent people and gets sick pleasure from it.
