We see other pilots go down to allow Luke to get a shot at the Death Star, he's got back up. Let's not forget that Luke would would have likely been shot down too is Han hadn't rushed in to shoot out Vader and save him last minute. So we see Luke take out the Death Star after everybody else guarded him and Obi-Wan gave him guidance.
