The whole point of the F-14 was to be a fleet defender and use the AIM-54 at long range. Obviously none of that was in Top Gun, because Top Gun was about Top Gun, the actual acm training. Most of the movie wasn't even about a war or killing Russians.
Top Gun 2 could easily be just as awesome if all they did was film real jets again in mock engagements like the first movie. It doesn't even have to be set in war time

See that's the problem. A modern movie would have all the battles be filled with airshow shit like this, instead of fights involving actual proper energy management. Of course the original was guilty of dumb shit (hit the brakes! A-4s are faster than F-14s!) but modern Hollywood is much worse.

The a-10 is a perfect murder machine, we just keep upgrading the ones we have. The main gun is so fucking powerful that sustained fire is strong enough to cancel out the forward thrust of the engine.
That being said it's been replaced by shit like the ac-130 gunship, and attack choppers. They're able to offer direct fire and close air support without having to make strafing runs.
